Hi all;

My classmate(a very nice person btw) said they were banned from a site for disagreeing with the majority opinion...

She asked me;
how it could happen since she has a hardware router installed and a "Dynamic" ip address?
I could not answer her ??

I'm really curious about this could anyone explain this?

Thanks in advance

The probably just banned her subnet which means any dynamic address she's likely to get will be within the blocked range.

In most cases, unless you do things to force a change, an IP address on a cable modem or DSL connection will keep the same IP address, even though it's a dynamic address.

As bsobel mentioned, they COULD ban a block of addresses, but that means your neighbors couldn't access the web site, either.

So kinda like:

Someone wearing a size 11 shoe steps on your foot and you respond by punishing ALL size 11 shoe wearers across the Country?? :)

Does that mean that my freind needs to "Sqeeze into" a size 10.5?

If by squeeze into a 10.5 you mean switch ISPs, then possibly. It all depends on how they did the ban. See if you can force a DHCPRELEASE, get a new IP (verify that it did indeed change) and see if she's still banned.

Hmmm... :shocked:

There are Millions of Web Sites. If going to this one is essential to her business she should sue.

Otherwise she can go and spread her message else where.:D

As for dynamic IPs there is No set Rules or across the board behavior.

My Cable IP changes every 6 weeks and there is Nothing that I can do about changing this behavior.

On the other hand my DSL Connection changes with every log Off (I.e switching Off the Modem) even if it a 10 sec. log off.

If I do not log off it would change by itself every 48 hours.

Even if you have a dynamic IP address you will almost always get the same IP. That's the way DHCP works.

When people dick around on the forums I run, I tend to just ban entire /24's, purely for my own convenience :)
If whoever runs that forum is lazy like that, your friend is pretty much screwed unless she switches to a new ISP, or goes through a proxy.
