Your idea of "eternity"

Hey all,

People were talking about t in the "big bang" thread, and it made me think. Whenever I think about eternity, it amazes me just how absolutely UNFATHOMABLE eternity is. Humans can NOT understand eternity. Everything we know and ever will know is finite. Understanding eternity completely is like being able to "see" a color that doesn't exist. No matter how hard you try to think of a color you have never seen, you can only visualize the ones you have seen. So, what are your illustrations of eternity? I've heard a few. I'll start with one for an example...

There is a ball of steel the size of the sun. On the ball is a cage with a small bird in it. Every 100 years, the bird is released from the cage, and it flies to the opposite end of the ball and pecks one time on its surface. Then, it flies back and is locked up for another 100 years. Eventually, the bird will destroy the ball, leaving nothing but the cage. At that point, a new ball will appear, and the bird will start over. Forever.

OK, that one's weird. --But it's word-for-word one that I heard once. Seems interesting enough. The amazing thing about eternity is the FUTILITY of it. Nothing can ever be accomplished in eternity.

So, tell me yours.

"no change" --Again, an idea that humans can not possibly grasp. Even if something doesn't SEEM to change, it is getting older with time. Things can not age in eternity.

Haha. Mobius strip kicks ass. I'll never forget the night I bought a pizza with the money I won from people in the dorm betting them that I could make something that had only one side. :)

Time it takes to off hold when calling a service company about a error on your bill is one I can think of lately,

I was like,

"I bet I can make something that only has one side."
"Yeah right."
"Seriously. And I can prove it to you. I'll bet you $2.00"
"OK. Prove it."
~~Make a mobius strip from a strip of paper and a piece of tape~~
"I have something in my hand... If you can put a pen on it, draw a straight line on it without picking up your pen one time, and end up at the point where you started, you prove it only has one side, and you owe me $2.00"
~~They always thought they had the upper-hand because THEY were gonna get to draw the line.~~
"OK. Give it to me."
~~A little drawing goes on, a look of confusion, and I end up $2 closer to ordering a pizza.~~

I was gonna say time between crashen on W2K, but it's not because those occourr always when I'm 1min short of downloading soething, so I guess it' more something like :

There is no ethernity, because there would have been something before the Big bang, and no future. If there is future there is time, and if there is time there are new thing changing, so there is no eternity, and never will be.

Man, took an ethernity to write this :)

Usul,

You don't understand eternity. That doesn't mean "There is no eternity." By the way, there is no "h" in the word. How could there possibly NOT be eternity? What comes after everything's finite existance? Nothing? For how long? FOR ETERNITY. What was before te big bang? Nothing? For how long? Eternity?

Does space go on for eternity? What is out side our univers? Is it just empty space or are there other universes?

Eternity is the time between when the light turns green and the car in front of you starts moving.

There is no such thing as eternity. The universe merely is.

Life is futile. The fact that you don't make a difference in the universe is something you have to accept. You don't really matter. Once you realize that, life is easier to live. You don't have to live up to any expectations or model. You just are.

At least that is my current philosophy. I have been much happier since I accepted my worthlessness.

Eternity is reading the political posts here on OT or trying to change anyone elses opinion.

LOL, Moonbeam. You are really witty lately. Too bad you are a Dem. :D:D

Time is the lense through which we see.

It is the "magic feather" by which Dumbo "flies" though existence.

When the feather (time) is wrenched from our grasp, we crash and burn.

Unless we start from the presupposition that we were meant to fly in the first place.

A bird does not fly because it has wings. It has wings because it was destined to fly.

Man does not have a concept of eternity because he lives in time. He has a concept of time because he is destined to live (or die) eternally.

P.S: I need time to figure out what I just wrote. It may take an eternity :)

I was tripping out on this thought too the other day...what I was thinking though is how the world as we know it has certain characteristic laws, etc that are normal to us. It's like eternity is the canvas, and this is one paiting, and since it's all we see, it's the only one we will accept as possible, and we can't imagine another painting, just like we can't imagine a color we have never seen. Since the world is so complex and defined, it is entirely possible by just the fact that this reality exsists that another reality with totally different characterstics could exsist, I'm talking so different that it is litterally unimaginable by our minds. I mean, if this reallity was created on the canvas of eternity and is true for us, then another reality, not nessericaly based on the same rules/universe/etc. could exsist. It's crazy, and to this, an infinate number of these realities could exsist all in eternity, just shows us the unimaginable scale of all.

However, I don't agree that eternity is not grapspable, of course, most of my thoughts about it are trying to define it, but I have had thoughts were I broke through my expectation, and I just let the thought of eternity exsist, without judgement, and that was cool, I understood it, but aknowledging it, but not thinking about it.
