I just realized I don't really have any classical music, and I don't really know what's good/bad. I have a crapload of different types of music, from blues/jazz to classic rock to techno/dance to rap to just plain rock/punk rock, etc... but not any classical. I would really like to experiment with this. It would make for excellent background music while I'm trying to think, I think. 😛

Well, you cant go wrong with the masters, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, ect. I myself am really into classical guitar. The best there is Andres Segovia, and John Williams(not the composer). Good Luck.
 
Grieg - Piano Concerto in A minor
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 5
Mahler - Symphony No. 2 (actually, they're all really good, I just picked 2 because I'm listening to it right now)
Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries
Verdi - La Forza del Destino
Dvorak - Symphony No. 9 "From the New World"
Moussorgsky/Ravel - Pictures at an Exhibition
Berlioz - Symphony Fantastique
Stravinsky - Rite of Spring
Gershwin - An American in Paris

I could list of whole ton more, those are just the stuff I've listened to most recently.

I would add to it, Beethoven's Symphonies (they're famous for a reason).
Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto's (Especially the third).
Anything by Chopin (If you are looking for piano music)
and Shuberts Unfinished Symphony.

Ah yes, Schubert's Symphony No. 8 "Unfinished", one of my favorites. Beethoven Symphonies 3, 5, 7, and 9 are top-notch (not to say the others aren't good, because they are).

I used to like those, but they get played to death by every single band on the face of the earth. I played then every year between 9th grade and now 1st year in college. It's absurd. Besides, Holst's Hammersmith is much better.

It's certainly not up to Beethoven, but if you're looking for something different, I have to suggest the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack.

I suggest Summer Overture and Meltdown.
 
I would say this is more Neo-Classical (is that a word?) but I have always loved the theme music for the movie Jurassic Park. Journey to the Island by John Williams.

Note, having string instruments in a song does not automatically qualify it as classical music...
 
I'll second Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, one of my favorites.
Try Adagio for Strings by Barber. You may remember it from Platoon or Homeworld.
The Planets by Gustav Holst has always been popular. I'm partial to Jupiter and Mars.

That's true, but classical, in modern connotation, is usually used to mean "played by an orchestra". If you want to get really technical, the only real classical music was written between about 1750 and 1830. Before that, it was baroque, and after that it was romantic and then contemporary.
