I've heard that the Famicom version of Metroid had better music due to audio enhancements from the Famicom Disk System hardware. The Famicom allowed audio to be piped in through specific pins in the cartridge connector, so the FDS and some game cartridges had enhanced audio beyond what the Famicom/NES can do by itself.

In the NES, those pins aren't wired to the cartridge connector at all...so they couldn't enhance audio in the same way, not even with enhancement chips in the game cartridge.

I'm guessing they took inspiration from the "Goldeneye 007" musical talent at Rareware but they knocked it out of the park. It's excessively distorted but that was the style then.
