Your favorite salsas!

I love salsa. I mean I really love salsa. I love to make it, I love to put it on everything from hamburgers & hot dogs to pasta, I love to eat it out of the jar with a spoon.

I think my two 'splurge' (more expensive) favorites are Desert Pepper Trading Co.'s Salsa Diablo & Frontera Grill's Tomatillo Salsa with serrano chiles, roasted onions, & cilantro. The former is spicy enough to make my nose run but has excellent flavor, while the latter has fantastic flavor (roasted tomatillos & cilantro!) & is pretty mild.

For every day eating, I like Archer Farms Roasted Pepper, which is really inexpensive, extremely yummy, and not too hot. I also like Paul Newman's Tequila Lime is also quite mild but has good flavor, I like to pair it with tortilla chips.

What are your favorite kinds of salsas that are commercially available?

My wife loves salsa too. She does eat it out of the bottle too. She normally just gets Chi-Chis salsa but every now and again she slurges and gets a local restauraunt's salsa (El Azteca). What is your favorite recipe to make home-made salsa? I've been wanting to get into making salsa

I have recently become a fan of Mrs. Renfros salsas.

They were on sale at the local grocery and thought I would give them a try, despite the picture of an old woman on the lid.

I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor. The peach and black bean salsas are mild but with excellent flavor, and the habanero one has a decent kick while still tasting delicious.

It is a bit expensive normally, but I always grab it when the grocery runs 2-for-1 deals.

Normally I just buy La Victoria or Herdez and add habanero sauce until it is as hot as I want.

Something not salty, kind of hot and not too liquidy. I don't have a favorite brand at the moment as I've been trying out different salsas. To make it even better, I found some salt free tortilla chips at the local grocery store, so the salsas taste much better.

It really just depends on what you have available & what you're in the mood for. I've found the real key isn't in the types of chiles, tomatos, vegetables, or seasonings used, it's getting fresh produce to make it with. Ratios just depend on taste. For example, when I make salsa for myself, I make it really hot, usually just by upping the amount of a hot type of pepper. I think cayennes & scotch bonnets taste better than habaneros, especially when roasted, so I tend to use those to add heat rather than habaneros. I also always add lots of fresh cilantro & lime juice to flavor. Salsa really is something that I just throw together, and rarely (if ever) use a recipe to make it.
