I heard that place was really good. Haven't been there yet.

I always go to "Buca De Bepo" (spelling?) That place has $20 family size spaghetti plates. Real good stuff.

The meatballs are bigger than an average fist.

i didn't like farallon when i went there, but apparently it's better now. very pretty inside, anyway. and the swan oyster depot is another one i've wanted to try for sometime - i saw that episode of $40 a day, and it looked great

The Stinking Rose @ 325 Columbus Ave

are you kidding? to each his own, but i don't eat there and i love garlic. it's just a marketing gimmick.

If you go to stinking rose you HAVE to eat the garlic ice cream! :)

I've also been to buca di beppo..or whatever it's called...i don't really understand why ppl like it so much. it's just normal italian food but in family style portions.

Spangers is awesome, not downtown tho its closer to berkeley.
However its been under new owners for a while now and i haven't great things.

Scoma's is always good, their french bread is most excellent.

The food is good, but the last time I went there the service was horrible. Only time I can remember leaving a $1 tip for a $40-50 meal.

I'd say go if you've never been, but I'll never go back.

I know it's not in SF, but zachary's pizza over in Bezerkely is awesome. There are lots of good places in the east bay without the $$$ prices normally found in SF.

Best Bang/Buck: Slanted Door

The French Laundry is not in SF - it's in the Napa Valley.

I used to live two blocks from Slanted Door - it is indeed pretty good, but overhyped IMO. On one memorable evening in our 'hood, President Clinton went to the Slanted Door, leading to a massive security sweep of Valencia St. I prefer the nearby Firecracker, which also offers modern Asian cuisine in a pretty restaurant, but is cheaper and easier to get into.

My favorite restaurant in SF is probably Plouf, a wonderful, inexpensive French/seafood restaurant downtown. My favorite cheap joints are House of Nanking, on the edge of Chinatown (some of the best Chinese in America IMO), Tu Lan (greasy-spoon Vietnamese downtown), and Taqueria Can-Cun (my sentimental favorite, though I have heard the quality has slipped since I lived in SF). The Stinking Rose is wildly overrated IMO, and kind of overwhelming unless you really, really like decent but not great Italian food made with 5 times more garlic than the recipes call for. It is OK but nothing special.

I know it's not seafood, but House of Prime Rib is an amazing restaurant

I agree , and I dont even like prime rib but they have the best creamed spinnage in the world.
