I'm honestly not sure what category this should go in because it's not really a console topic or home theater.

Anyways, I love the netflix experience on my xbox 360 but think it's silly that I'm paying for an xblive memebership just for that (I dont really game). Anyone have a roku or a blu-ray player with netflix built in? Is the experience similar?

I just use my laptop. HDMI to the tv. I guess I don't see the point of a Netflix ready device.

Well, I hate to use sexist terms, but it's much more "wife friendly." I also don't have an extra laptop to leave hooked up 24/7, so that's another annoyance.

I've only used the Xbox 360 myself. Instead of finding a different device, maybe you should find some games you like to play on Live. :p If you get good deals on Live cards, the Roku box costs as much as over 3 years of Live.

Do you mean that you really don't see the point of a Netflix ready device, or you just don't feel that you need one?

Ha! Well, I'm such a casual gamer that I get SLAUGHTERED every time I try to play anything on XBLive. Even guitar hero (which I consider myself decent at) - I get my ass handed to me every single time

I do have an Xbox 360 hooked up, but my TV is also my computer monitor, so I generally use my computer. It's quieter than the 360.

I have a roku and absolutely love it. Have it hooked to my Onkyo 806 receiver via hdmi and my Pioneer plasma.
The Roku has a great interface and works well. Price is reasonable too.

You could still get it on your xbox without paying for Xbox Live.

Buy Play On!, install on a PC that's always on, on your home network and enjoy.

As a bonus you'll have Hulu as well.

They're having a sale right now also for the paid version (only a 30 day trial is free) use this code for $10 off: FALL10OFF

You pay once and get lifetime upgrades and support, well worth the money IMO and works for both the Xbox and PS3 and will even let you stream local media you have on a PC on your network to either console.

Good point, I can see the point of a netflix ready device for some, I guess what I meant was that I don't see the point of a netflix ready device for people like me: late 20s and living by myself. When I'm hanging out with my friends and they pull up Netflix on the 360 the interface is terrible and seems like much more of a PITA, and it's more expensive. I also like the fact that when I carry my laptop with me, I also have my netflix account, so I can plug it into any tv, I guess you probably wouldn't lose that if you used a separate device at home.

I actually have used playon in the past (demo) and, back then, it needed some work. I'm sure it's much better now, but is the netflix streaming quality as good as the xblive experience?

If I remember correctly, the quality was marginally better than YouTube played full screen

360 Elite, works great and is quiet.

If I had a home theater PC set up I might use that since I could also watch other streaming like Hulu.

i have a roku and 360 with xbox live to view netflix

if you have xbox live anyway, then of course that works, but if you just want a netflix player, the roku is very good, very small box, easy to move to different tv's and it is both wired and wireless to connect to internet

the cost of 2 years xbox live will pay for your roku

the interface is basically the same

I had Netflix for a short period just to test it out with Play On! and had no complaints, looked good to me, this was using my PS3 however.

Just re-download and sign up for a new 30 day trial and see what you think before buying.

Sounds like a plan - I'll be trying playon tonight and, if that doesn't work out, looks like a Roku box it is.

Thanks guys - xblive or not, a 2nd device for our bedroom tv would be a good idea.

Netflix streaming quality is pretty bad unless it is in HD. HD streaming is only available on netflix ready boxes and this excludes PCs
