unless you guys only upgrade once in 10 years, don't you run into diminishing returns? I can't imagine that HL2 looks that much better on a card from 2011 than one from 2008.

Actually they add features to it every so often, like HDR over the whole game (not just that Lost Coast demo), and some other features, like more and better choices of AA and AF.

Admittedly, I'll still fire up the original FarCry and run through some levels, get sucked in and play the game through :)

yeah, although there are some mods that can really crank the textures, but straining memory buffer is one thing, straining the GPU is another...so yeah, basically the GPU and CPU power required to run this game butter smooth even with the highest extra eyecandy cranked up has been around for years now

but yeah, I stopped running through HL2 after my 5850 (which I grabbed in October of '09) and being able to crank up SSAA and maintain frame rates beyond butter smooth

Hey gang.

I just recently upgraded my mobo, ram, cpu anf gpu.

I had never played GTA IV because I heard how it did not run very well unless you had a quad core. I also hated that there was no AA

I am currently playing it and having quite a good time with it.....I now understand what people said about it not being optimized

Anyway, the game does look good all modded up....but I hate the way the game saves games.

Was going to post a few screenshots, but all I am getting is the dreaded red X where my screenshot should be.

Arma 2 in eyefinity. Yep 2x 7970's still not enough to make it run on highest settings.
That game as got to be absolutely unoptimized/shittly coded. The graphics are FAR from impressive.

And yes, the enviroments are huge, but so are the ones in Just Cause 2 and that game still blows my mind and runs at 120FPS+

Fallout 3 also had a huge world, but the bullet physics in that game were so bad it's not even funny. From what I remember, ARMA has a very realistic bullet physics system. Maybe it's stuff like that that add to the performance costs (as well as some lazy dev work)?
