Your favorite ending? [WARNING: UNIVERSAL SPOILER THREAD]

Just a note to those previewing this thread: spoiler tag use encouraged but not mandated for this thread. Be warned.

I've been thinking a bit about how to draw a story to a close. It isn't easy to wrap up a book with a long, overarching story with more than one timeline and world.

What book, movie, game, etc. (any work of fiction) has your favorite ending? Or least favorite? I think The Chronicles of Narnia has my favorite ending, and least favorite would have to either be the His Dark Materials or The Dark Tower.

To be honest, I'm a sucker for a happy ending (hey, get your mind out of the gutter!). The classic "and they lived happily ever after" or an expanded version of that is still a favorite for me, though it is a fairytale cliche.

the dark knight rises, where bruce wayne dies

He doesn't die though 😛 The Lazarus pit recoups him after Bane breaks him. For my part though, it has to be Pan's Labyrinth. It's touching and poignant, as you wonder whether or not it was all in her head.

Jurassic Bark (Futurama episode). I can't actually watch it because it leaves me bawling like a child who lost Christmas, but damn, is it just the most perfect ending to elicit a strong emotional response.

Most adventure/disaster/thriller movies have expected endings, so nothing there.

But, Se7en was something.

You hate that it ended that way, but you can't think of any other way to end it either.

Similarly, 'The Time-traveller's Wife'; but then, the book dictated some of it. Just as 'Silence of the Lambs'.

On the lighter side, 'You Got Mail' was satisfying in the way it closed (even if expected); as was 'Shawshank Redemption'.

Like The Game too.

Loved Jumanji - but hated the ending; by 'undoing' everything, it made the whole preceding movie useless, almost like a dream.

Then there was Lord of the Rings (the 3rd/last part), which just did not want to let go, and kept going interminably. There were a half-dozen 'endings' there!

The whole ending sequence of 'Leon' was epic and awesome. It's either a shame that he died (no sequels), or a blessing (a sequel might have been terribly done, and tarnish one of the best films of the 90s).

The Planet of the Apes (original). Also Easy Rider, but I don't know that I'd describe is my favorite but it really blew my mind. Didn't expect it.

That one romantic comedy movie - can't think of the name right now, but it's the one where the guy and girl hit it off, everything is going well, then one of them does something to fuck it up and 20 minutes later in the movie realizes how much he/she loves the other and they get back together at the end.

OMG dude they were on a BREAK!
