Finally doing this because everyone around here likes to label every electronic track they've ever heard as trance. I know I sound like I'm on a high pedestal, but thats because I produce some of this music myself. There is a very wide range of genres out there. Its kind of annoying to see all the electronic music threads entitled "Trance" and then have everyone post every single form of EDM in that thread.

I mostly welcome people from the UK or Canada since there are a lot of you lurking about. American's don't know much about the music, which is not so much their fault - its mostly because the scene hasn't been around here as long and because American's are simply naive to all the different kinds of EDM that is out there. Lets give some of the people around here who think Tiesto is god some different music to try. Here are my favorites and the genres the usually produce/spin. Keep in mind most good DJs will spread out their sets, spinning a wide range of music or at least the good ones do. So using Paul Oakenfold as an example, sure he spins some trance still, and thats what he was always known for - but the fact is that he spins very little trance anymore and most of the music he produces now is not trance at all.

House/Trance DJs

John Digweed - Progressive House
Sasha - Progressive House, Pregressive trance
Hernan Cattaneo - Progressive House
Desyn Masiello - Progressive House
Luke Fair - Progressive House, Electro
Jonathan Lisle - Progressive House, Progressive Breaks

House Producers

Trentmoller
King Unique
Chable and Bonnicci
Slacker
Guy Gerber
Trafik
Pig and Dan

Breakbeat DJs

Atomic Hooligan
Meat Katie
Freq Nasty
Jay Cunning
The Breakfastaz

Breakbeat Artists/Producers

The Crystal Method
The Chemical Brothers
Orbital - Hard to classify, but mostly Breaks

Drum and Bass

Dieselboy
LTJ Bukem - 2 step, UK Garage

EDIT: I forgot to add. Also include where you live, how long you have been listening to Electronic music in its various forms, and what artist/band started it all for you. Basically who you think started you into listening to electronic music. For me Front 242 probably started it all. Frontline Assembly, NIN, Skinny Puppy and a few others. I've been lapping up everything I can find since.

Underworld and Orbital are pretty much the only electronic artists I can still listen to...the rest gets old too fast. Juno Reactor is good in small doses, too, but his albums have gotten progressively worse.

I'm sure theres a lot more out there that you can try and would like. No Crystal Method? Try some of the old Chemical brothers. Also try the first few Basement Jaxx albums, and even some Groove Armada.

Because I can't stand that stuff anymore. I consider it sad that I used to listen to it at all. I was listing my favorites, and sorting them by genre even if it was a bit loosely. Feel free to post that stuff if thats your favorite, which I'm assuming it is.

yeah...the Electronic genre is a very "Different Strokes for different folks" kinda thing. It's not fair to totaly bash one genre over another...different people like different things, as plainly as that. I personally cannot stand electronica that is only beats with no melody...that is why I fancy Trance :)

I understand. When I first got into the DJ aspect of electronic music, trance was by far my favorite. I simply grew out of it. The truth of the matter is that Trance is the POP music of the EDM scene. Its more popular and easier to listen to for the majority of people. Blink 182 and other POP Punk artists represent the same thing for Rock music. Thats also why I can't stand it, Good Charlotte being to worst though.

Once again, I don't want to sound like an elitist. But 99% of the people I know who got into this music, grew away from trance almost completely. And I know a lot of people who like this music. Even a lot of the artists that have been doing this for a long time have drifted away from Trance. Paul Oakenfold is a prime example, he doesn't like what trance has become and has moved away from it. Tiesto on the other hand hasn't changed much at all, Paul Van Dyk either. Then there is artists like BT, who used to be PURELY Progressive music, then became more trancy - released "Movement in still Life" which had lots of different kind of stuff on it, breaks, trance, etc. Then with his latest album he went Pure POP. BT is the absolute epitome of electronic POP music now.

I am sorry to chew you out...but there is no way Trance could be considered pop...if ANYTHING, Happy Hardcore is the only EDM genre that could be considered pop....and I personally feel it is. That and mainstream artists such as The Crystal Method are the "pop"
of EDM...in my mind at least.

Pop = Pupular (on the radio)...aka Crystal method, DJ Sammy (not trance), Bonkers (happy hardcore)

Nope, used to listen to all of those, they just get old (Basement Jaxx especially so). Although I still give Goodbye Country Hello Nightclub a spin every now and then. Lovebox is just horrible, though.

I also still listen to Air and Hooverphonic fairly regulary, but they're a bit outside of the genres we're discussing, IMO.

oakie is categorized as something called 'industrial' now whatever that means. its not something im used to but its definitely different. I think BT hit their 'pop' epitome when they collaborated with tiesto for 'love comes again.' dont get me wrong, i love the song but its old and overplayed by now. what do you guys think about vocal trance?

No I don't think so. Thats why I wanted to start this thread, Air is fantastic. And I think Hooverphonic did some of my favorite stuff ever.

Not at all dude. Not sure where you heard that from, but you can discredit whoever did tell you that. Industrial is heavy, and usually accompanied by Electric guitar, Electronic music. Think Frontline Assembly, Skinny Puppy, some NIN. That is Industrial music. Oakenfold hasn't done anything that even remotely resembles Industrial.

If you want to get an idea of what Industrial is. Plug this IP into your winamp player.

Freaking Oakenfold tried everything he even includes rap/hip hop in his songs, I am like I ran away from that sort of non-talented type of music and it comes up right here in an EMD form hell noooooooo screw Oakenfold he has nothing to do with trance.

Oakey definetely had his day. Check the 1999 Essential Mix thread for the reasons why, definetely the highlight of his career. I personally like a lot of the production he did on the Swordfish soundtrack too, but thats it.

Now he is just an ego maniac who let the money and fame go to his head. That and he snorted wayyy too much coke in his career, trust me I know this for a fact.
