What would some of your all-time favorite blues musicians be? This thread is less focusing on the artists themselves, and more on the riffs or tunes they are known for. For example, and this isn't a blues example, maybe people love Yngwie Malmsteen for his musical brilliance in certain outstanding guitar solos - while many people are indifferent towards or dislike his music because it doesn't quite have the *soul* of Satriani's style.

I love Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix - but Stevie Ray Vaughan puts a much calmer, bluesish touch to it in his version of the song.

Kenny Wayne Sheperd is a great, young guitarist. He was heavily influenced by SRV. Eric Johnson is another great one

*side note* I LOVE Yngwie, he's my idol!

The live version of Little Wing, found on the "In the West" release has a much more bluesy sound to it than the studio version. He really wails on the solo. Jimi tended to have more of a blues sound in his live performances, and Red House from the same "In the West" album is probably one of the most perfectly played blues pieces. He doesnt miss a single note and jumps through just about every routine possible. It helps to have a nice blues drummer backing him up too. Hear My Train A Comin from the "Rainbow Bridge" album is another great blues performance, with better use of vocals than Red House, though his playing isnt "perfect". Very raw and powerful though.

I think those tracks can be found on the new box set, if you are looking for "in print" releases.
