What is your favorite brand / favor?

Also I need a recommendation. My mom likes beef jerky but is sensitive to salt. While I recognize that by nature, it's going to be salty, what beef jerky is less salty than normal?

I like Wild Bills. Simple, and no nitrites. Lots of salt though, so probably not good for mom.

It's been so long I forget, and I always loved Beef Jerky.

Dried, salted meat is pretty much almost the definition of jerky, so that one might be hard to find on the shelf.

It's not beef, but it's so delicious. It might have a little less salt than regular beef jerky since it's a sweet jerky, but I never looked at the label to find out.

I've had a few of the Kraves, and I haven't liked any of them. They were all too moist, and too sweet.

So in Texas we have some places called Buccee's... Not sure if it's

The whole point of Buccee's is a one-stop shop for when you are on the road, so it's typical to see them when you are driving from city to city moreso than within your own city. Though they are popping up with new locations everywhere. They are essentially HUGE gas stations with a huge store attached with kickass restrooms. Here's a couple images from their beef jerky area, the stuff is expensive but absolutely delicious and the best I've ever had.

My uncle makes his own venison jerky after deer season is over. IIRC, he has a digital smoker/dehydrator that he does it in. Spices and all that I'm not so sure about, but it's the perfect consistency. Easily the most delicious I've had. Good for me, deer season is almost here :D

My favorite is that cherry flavored pork Krave brand they sell at Costco. Best price (when on sale) and to me the most tasty. I heard not long ago that the company was taken over, however, so don't know how things are going to go. I have 3 unopened 16 oz. bags of this stuff and an open one in the fridge.

Yeah, that's the stuff. My all time favorite, but I'm not much of a jerky guy. :)

It's pretty easy--and cheap--to make your own. Probably the only way to get the low salt that you are looking for; though I'm not sure how good (adequately preserved) it will be without being properly salted.

I'm supposed to be eating a lot more salt these days, so jerky has become a staple snack for me. I picked up 2 bags of McSweeney's on the weekend; interested to see if it can compete with Krave.

To address your question about salt:

I have a package of Pacific Gold All Natural ORIGINAL Beef Jerky. The packaging says 1 oz. contains 520mg sodium.

My packaging for Krave Cherry Barbeque flavor Pork Jerky says 1 oz. contains 320mg sodium.

My cousin and spouse showed me how they make their own. I don't know why they do this, maybe they have their reasons. They do hit Costco very regularly. They can certainly afford to buy ready made. They lay out strips of teriyaki marinated beef in a very slow oven. Maybe they are trying to reduce their sodium intake. They also introduced me to stevia, a sugar substitute, which I have on hand myself now, but I still use sugar when I want to.

I make my own and its amazing.

What's your recipe & procedure? I actually just mounted my dehydrator on top of my upright freezer in the basement so I can have it going 24/7, looking for some good stuff to try!

Happened to have a Wild Bills wrapper in the trash at work. 580mg/oz salt.

I understand beef jerky is inherently salty, but there seems to be a wide range. One jerky vender had stuff at 280mg (for his super sweet) and over 1000mg (for some favors). I'm just looking for stuff in the lower end for my mom.

Thanks for the replies.

If turkey is acceptable . . soak turkey frank sections in water for several days to reduce sodium, then microwave to dehydrate. Spoon options include blending with some cheese.

I like TCS jerkey out of Oregon. Its kinda pricy, so I order it sparingly, but soo good.
