Post your current "must have" apps.

Froyo Kangerade 1.0, ChevyNo1 low voltage kernel at 1GHz. Smoothest so far for me.

myLock for Froyo

Basically eliminates the lock screen. Can set it to use any key to wake the phone, can unlock the phone with a double press.

ADW Launcher, LauncherPro

Hard to pick, both have super smooth app trays, persistent keys, extra shortcut areas, Sense like desktop preview, worth trying both.

Space Man

Basically move your dude left or right and find space for him, hard to describe. Perfect time waster for me, games don't last long, doesn't require paying much attention, good for when you're standing in line somewhere.

Beautiful Widgets

Worth the price in my opinion, pretty sure most people know what it is. Skinnable clock and weather.

Obviously ROM is going to vary from phone to phone but for my EVO I am using Fresh .3

I use the Helix launcher with Beautiful Widgets. I only use three screens, just don't have a need for more.

Apps: Beautiful Widgets, Helix Launcher, BeyondPod, Firehouse Scheduler, Shazam, Xila Live, Barcode Reader, fring, Handcents SMS, ShootMe, Nesoid, OverClock Widget, wireless tether, Titanium Backup, TV.com, I think that's enough for now.

Get the Mario Live Wallpaper before it gets pulled. To my surprise, almost no impact on anything else on the phone. No lag on the homescreen, no lag on the app tray. The only change I made was to turn of the background.

I was just going to post this... Is there a way to backup .apks in case it gets pulled and need to reinstall apps (such as may happen after an upgrade to Froyo).

Titanium Backup

Pay the couple bucks for the donate version. It lets you schedule backups, its 10x faster than the free version and the Dev is very helpful.

Thanks for the tips, I just got Astro which seems to work fine, although I might look into this one to have a more robust backup solution in the future.

astro lets you back up apks

I'm just learning this now . . . ? I've been using Astro as a file manager.

Question though, if I back up all the apks for installed applications with Astro, then restore them after I wipe data/cache and install a new ROM, and install the apks from Astro's backup, will the apps show up in Market as installed? IE, when I hit Market>Menu>Downloads, will they show as Installed and flagged if updated versions are available? Currently, if I install an apk that is not on the Market, they do not how up in the Downloads view and I have to manually check for updated versions.

simple answer: not always

Titanium includes a "Market Doctor" that does that for you. It also backs up the data from apps and your system info

Fresh 2.1.2 (still rocking a hero, no plans to upgrade anytime soon) overclocked to 710MHz.
Running the vanilla lockscreen with all text removed.
ADW Launcher (IMHO, best out there followed by Launcher Pro Beta - Sense can suck a nut)
Air Control (similar to flight control and harbor master)
Aldiko (ebook reader)
Andoku (sudoku)
Astro (file manager)
Barcode Scanner
Battery Indicator (battery % remaining in taskbar)
EDIT: Beautiful Widgets, how could I forget!
Google Maps/Nav (can't go anywhere without it)
OverclockWidget
QuickBoot
Smooth Calendar
Spare Parts
Uninstaller
WordUp (challenging word search game, lotsa fun)
XDA app

Waiting for Fresh 2.3 and/or CyanogenMod 6 for the Hero, otherwise completely happy.
