My choice for a system at home:

FX55 w/ 1gb ddr, asus a8n sli premium.

or

x2 4400+ w/ 1gb ddr, asus a8n sli premium.

No overclocking, video is a bfg 7800gt, onboard sound on both boards, raptor 74gb as the disc.

which? Good mix of desktop applications and games, web surfing.

i would personally go for the x2 combination, and upgrade to 2gb of ram later when funds allow. i have the 660, and its a great processor. compare it to an x2.... i'm ashamed to have bought it without doing the research first :( . now granted, i'm perfectly happy with my 660 at 4.44 ghz... but you aren't overclocking which hurst the 660 even more in the comparison, and that woul dbe leaving the x2 at stock then comparing it to the overclocked 660 (the 660 still losing... lol). thats just my opinion.

yea I do like seeing the x2 idling at 96f. Of course I'm getting the 660 combo for next to nothing (well, not free, but nice), and was looking that I could sell the x2 combo and make about 300 free and clear on it.. So was looking for a compelling reason to switch it to the home setting and sell off the x2..

Guess I need to assemble it and see how how she really gets and how much some ram to upgrade would cost me..

I just switched to an X2 and I think it is much snappier then my old 3200 so I would go that route.

I'd go with the X2, especially if you actually use your computer for more than just single-threaded benchmarks.

I say that as somebody currently running an fx-55, fyi.

I actually made this choice just after the X2 came out and went with the X2 no regrets whatsoever.

In fact you system will be very similar to what I've got, and I certainly have no complaints to make.

can people on these forums stop telling posters to "get an opty" or "get an opteron". from all i've heard, opterons perform the same as all other amd chips in the price range. he said hes not overclocking so i dont see a point in people posting that. he asked "FX55 w/ 1gb ddr, asus a8n sli premium.

or

x2 4400+ w/ 1gb ddr, asus a8n sli premium. " where do you see opteron? i dont know

i'm in the same situation as the OP, i'm a gamer but i'd want to be able to handle games in the upcoming 2006 (but i dont know what he is) so i think i'm leaning towards the x24400+ or 4800+

4400 offers far more bang for the buck.

It's $450 vs $850 for the FX. It's performace is indescerable in single threaded apps... talking like 10%-15% slower here and only sometimes where it's all CPU power like winrar or something, less so in gaming- I personallly would'nt pay a 100% price premium for 10-15% boost in everything let alone in just some applications. Then you have the whole issue of multitreads which the 4400+ will show up much faster, at least 50% faster - for 50% less money! No brainer IMO. 4400+

anymore info?? i'm considering 4800+ toledo or fx 60. looking at the specs on newegg, the fx 60 is only 200mhz clock faster than the 4800+ cache is the same, are there any other differences between the two? why didn't amd just name it x2 5000+ toledo? i'm confused
