Your career path

Some day I wonder what ever lured me to I.T. All I really wanted to be was a band director...

What was your career choice/path and where did you end up? Mine went something like this:

High School --> Music School --> Pharmacy School --> Military --> I.T.

High School --> College with Computer Science Major --> Dropped out of college due to bad attendance --> Bounced around crappy customer service jobs --> Future wife got pregnant --> Technical School, graduated with AAS in Network Admin --> Jobs as Linux Admin or Windows Admin --> Focused on VMware, got certified --> IT Consultant

My entire career can be traced back to a single day in third grade when I decided learning to juggle was taking too much damn effort and went back to playing Montezuma's Revenge on my mother's Apple IIe. Everything else just naturally fell in line.

High School->Navy->College(Geology)->computer operations->computer programming->corporate PC/network/IT support.

High School -> ECE focus degree -> Change majors to CIS after I excelled at required programming courses -> naturally land IT jobs -> now stay here due to $$ and the fact I'm clearly technically minded (and annoyingly so)

High School --> College (Nuclear Engineering) --> Job as nuclear engineer/licensing engineer/PM

I guess I am boring.

HS->year working crappy retail job and realizing I don't want to be like the 40 year old coworkers that hated their lives->enrolled in Civil Engineering at college->realized the math teachers suck and I didn't want to self-teach myself advanced math->IT

Game programming (actually got paid a little for it) -> BS in comp sci -> grad school (never finished Ph.D) -> software development jobs

You went from pharmacy school to IT? 😕

I'm personally trying to make a switch from IT to physical therapy (DPT).

Yeah I was a bad chemistry student. Music school was the goal, dropped out due to college-level alcoholism, re-enrolled as a pharmacy student because I wanted a lucrative career, sucked at that, dropped out, joined the service.

growing up i loved video games so i wanted to make them.

quickly in school i learned that game programming was a much more niche software avenue that was much harder to break into, so i never made it into game programming nor do i have any desire to. but i went from...

highschool -> bs comp sci -> software developer

and that is where i'm at now. really glad i took this path as financially i'm making a lot more than most of my friends and most others that are my age in their careers, unless they are doctors or business owners.

and i actually enjoy what i do and don't mind coming to work, whereas i know quite a bit of my friends dread it daily, and they don't have relaxed hours like i do. some of them are shocked that i can leave/come as i please as long as i hit 40 hours a week.

I guess I should elaborate..

...Military --> IT --> Network Admin for Power Co. --> Hospital IT Supervisor

It wasn't then, but sure feels like it now

HS -> Comp Sci -> Comp Sci Dropout -> Business -> Accounting -> Accounting Info Sys -> First job as an accountant -> Second job as a financial analyst -> Third job as a Business Analyst doing software development

I'm pretty close at HS>University - Accounting Degree>Big Accounting Firm currently. Overall, have you been pretty happy with your accounting background?

high school > BS in ECE w/ focus in embedded devices > realized I was better at cs stuff than i was at embedded > Software Engineer

HS --> English major --> BSBA, IT --> MBA --> MS, IT --> Ed.S/PhD dropped out --> IT consulting

switched out from English to MIS after seeing all of my friends making money. always wanted to become a teacher. 🙁 soon as kids are older i may go back to school.
