Your biggest gripe with your favorite IM program?

Firstly I prefer ICQ over any other IM program, but there is one (and it's only a "new" thing, too) downfall, IMO. But it really really annoys me sometimes. There is a rate limit, I think it was implimented ever since the AOL takeover. That means if you get disconnected and reconnect, and that happens too many times within a small period of time, you can't log on anymore, for say, an hour. :| This is happening right now, and it's a big pissoff since I need to talk to people on there. I use MSN also, but it's so damn unreliable. I remember several times when it was down for several days, nearly a week, for almost everybody. The other day it was down all day just for me. Furthermore, I hate the interface, (naturally, being an icq user).

There MUST be a way to avoid the rate limit exceeded error message in ICQ/AIM? It's enfuriating. It's not MY fault I had to reconnect, it's ICQ's fault for disconnecting me several times in a row. I don't spam people, I don't even accept messages from people not on my list (and everyone on my list I know in real life, 'cept 2 or 3 people).

So yeah that's my biggest gripe with my favorite instant messenger program. What's yours?

<< My biggest gripe is freaking AOL keeps blocking it. >>

Are you referring to Trillian being blocked by AOL?

The fact that AIM/AOL scatters a bunch of ad/links around your system when you install it: leave my favorites, links, desktop, and start menu alone, god dam it!

Yeah, I agree that has gotten out of hand. The latest version of ICQ is one of the best in terms of lack of bloat, and lots of functionality, good install program -- but for god's sake we don't need 50 links to free AOL that we don't want!

I usually use Miranda to connect to ICQ, but I've been messing around with ICQ Plus and some skins, and got AOL ICQ to actually look semi-decent. But damn..

ICQ is waaaaaaaaaaay to bloated, and it's inconvenient having to find and install ICQ 99b.

I wish it would allow you to only install what you want but it's free software so why am I bitching?

I have every version of ICQ, so if you want I can hook you up at any time. Or, you could go to this site. Or this one which I know from experience to work and be reliable, always was able to DL from there.

Some sites have lots of tools for ICQ too, so you can hack it up if you wish. :p

I'd just recommend Miranda ICQ, though, since it's the best ICQ client. Get the History+ plugin and away you go. :)

I wish ICQ99b worked properly. I think it's because they are trying to force you to use even more bloated 2000 or even ungodly bloated 2001 because people never get my requests for authorization and people say they need to get authorization to add me to their lists even though I don't have that on (and I never get the 'please authorize me' messages) so I can't add a bunch of people and they can't add me!

AIM: everyone uses this stupid IM client! The warning system is...abused a lot; warning wars? Wth?
ICQ: I have to hit ctrl+enter to send text? And I can't change that? WTH??
MSN: Arrg, sometimes, it takes like 5 frieking minutes to send an "instant" message on this thing! Other than that, this client is pretty good...
Yahoo! This client kicks! Except, I can't use IMvironments unless the other person is also using Yahoo! 5 :( Those IMvironments are cool, even though totally unnecessary
Trillian: No gripes, except AOL needs to get their act together so I can actually log on without worrying about being locked out. 0.724 seems to be the end of the AOL vs Trillian war for now :D

I would like AIM to store messages when you aren't online so you can get them later.. but i guess that's asking too much.

I use Trillian and it's perfect. :D It's not Trillian's fault that AOL keeps making it so it can't connect. It's AOL's fault!!!!!!!! :|

I love YahooIM. I've tried all of the popular IM programs, and I have to say, Yahoo's the best. My only gripe with it is that not many people use it so I'm forced to use AIM if I need to chat with anyone

Trillian is my favourite. And it works nicely for ICQ and MSN. But I'm having trouble connecting to AIM and Y!...

MSN frequently loses messages due to its apparent lack of message confirmation, something ICQ has had since it's inception.

I use AIM. My biggest complaint is that its built in minibrowser only supports HTTP 1.1. It makes it hard as hell to log someone's handle when they look at your info (HTTP 1.1 treats a space as a terminating character, so anyone who formats their handle with spaces screws over most logging systems).

Edit: Wait, the new AIM Today window uses an IE COM object, meaning it can almost be a fully fledged web browser. I'm gonna have to investigate this...
