This is a new thing, apparently. Virtually overnight I have seen a number of local frozen yogurt bars. Some are franchises, some are not.

In case you don't know what it is, you choose your frozen yogurt, choose from a bunch of toppings, and pay by weight.

I admit I am going to one with some frequency but there is no way the market can support as many as I am seeing and I cannot help but wonder if people down on their luck are cashing out their 401ks to start a business.

Yup. It started with TCBY in my area maybe 8 months ago. Now we have Pinkberry, Sweet Frog, etc. LOADS of them.

Sweet Frog is awesome btw. Definitely the king!

It seems like they're on every corner in the city. I don't remember the names of any of them, though, because they're all basically identical in every way.

There's a Yogurty's Froyo in our downtown that opened up recently. I guess it's a chain. They don't seem to do booming business though. They made the mistake of opening up across from an ice cream parlour that's a local staple. Every summer night it's packed while the froyo place only seems to do enough business to stay open.

Yes, it already happened here - but they don't last more than 6 months before closing.

Yeah a year or two back there was an article about these. Its just the same explosion of coffee and "gourmet" fast food places that have cropped up. Just like those way over expanded the yogurt places have as well. Everything is boom and bust, mostly because people will see one and think they can do it a bit differently better so they build an entire franchise around it.

Yogurt Mill in El Cajon is fucking gooooood! You get a 32oz Styrofoam soda cup full of it for like 6 bucks, and can add a bunch of toppings for cheap. They have a different flavor of the day every day. Outside of the typical 30 people ahead of you in line, the place is awesome. While it's not as tasty as the fancy places, at most of those for the same price you get a cup not even half the size.

a tip - eating 32oz of frozen yogurt in 1 sitting isn't something I'd advise.

Happened about 5 years ago in Texas. The number of places explode. Maybe 10% are left.

I don't know how they make enough money to pay their rent. A lot around here aren't doing well.

Yogurt bubble burst around here like 5 years ago. Newest thing could be cronuts, liquid N2 ice cream, or craw fish.

More and more have been opening recently around me but there have been several that were already established a year or two ago. Way too many are opening. I do enjoy Red Mango quite a bit though, can trick myself into thinking its a "healthy" treat hah.
