So you don't like Christmas because of Christian traditions in countries that you don't even live in? Wow...you have trans-border hate! That can't be healthy.

No IDGAS about Christmas in America, but someone started saying that Christmas in Europe sucks, so I said isn't it the same in America, then you chirped in.

American English lesson for you, if something is "the shit" it means it's great.

The only one saying that Christmas anywhere sucks is you.

Ahh.. OK. Well I'm not saying christmas sucks, I'm saying Christian Christmas sucks, unless your Christian... In which case it's quite apt.

Under the new use of "the shit" I withdraw my last few posts.

I try to stay hip to the latest youth lingo but that one took me a while to figure out.

You should try spending some time on a base with the coolest of the gangstas who will "light some niggah up tonight" and you'll understand more of it than you could ever want to.

I've walked around a base (one specific, if anyone has been there they know which one it is) and shook my head at the crap that passes for language so much that most of them probably thought i had ticks.

I've noticed a disturbing trend with the younger generation- they're less and less interested in following any type of traditions. In our office alone, I hear things every day along the lines of

"Eh...I don't put but a Christmas tree or decorate...it's just more crap to clean up later."

"We don't pass out candy or decorate for Halloween- too busy."

"We don't celebrate Thanksgiving- why bother."

Even my kids are doing it- I mentioned watching A Charlie Brown Christmas, and they both said "Why- we've seen it before!"

It seems like the Internet has trained people to think "If you have to focus on something for more than a few minutes, it's not worth the time." Our attention spans don't permit for one thing to occur at a time. Then people constantly complain about being bored, depressed, and feeling useless. I think there's a direct correlation.

Traditions aren't there to make extra work, they've been created to let you focus on enjoying yourself and others. If you don't follow any, you're depriving yourself and making your life less fulfilling.

So, if you're one of those "I don't do such and such because it's a stupid waste of time" people, please try it once. It doesn't mean you're a conformist-- you'll probably end up with a smile on your face and a fond memory.

You're right. I think I'll download a Christmas screen saver.

yeah.. I don't plan on celebrating Halloween except to go to a party. I don't care to celebrate Thanksgiving either (Not a food person). I don't care to celebrate Christmas. If there was no stigma attached to not celebrating Christmas I'd be sooo happy, but there is always stigma. Always the stigma.

I don't personally care for Christmas because it's just boring. It was a cool holiday when I was a kid because I got presents, now it's like... "I want money. I don't want useless shit I'll never use. I'm practical." And it's horrible being OVERLY PRACTICAL.

Hint: Christmas isn't about the presents

Where did you paste that from? heh

Just because something is widely accepted as a tradition doesn't mean you should feel obligated to participate if it means nothing to you. My family has its own traditions, I don't need to be told that I have no interest in tradition just because I don't want to watch A Christmas Story for the 300th fucking time.

the movie sucks so thats OK

Well Haloween, is some crap americans made up (the modern one, with pumkins and dressing up etc) easter = christian, valentines day = card company crap. New years eve? I think everyone enjoys that.

Am I missing any?

This is false. It started in the middle ages. It is an Irish/British tradition, originally known as 'Souling'.

Neckarb, a quick question for you. You don't like music, you don't like Christmas, you don't like sports.
What do you like?

I have traditions that I follow regularly, but most aren't mandated to me by society. They are usually made up by me and the SO.

We do celebrate most traditional holidays, though. We usually get fireworks for new years, drive around town looking at lights during christmas eve, turkey for thanksgiving, scary movie night for Halloween, etc

I do like christmas, and I said that the whole dressing up and "trick or treat" crap started in America.

I quite clearly said:

Fair enough. Once I reached the end of the thread I was under the impression that you did not like Christmas.

Apologies.
