Where to begin......
Well i was doing some google searching about my computer problem and wound up coming here. So i figured that maybe someone else had a similar problem or could help me. I have worked on this problem for around 4 hours now.

Well it all started when my POS 16x dual layer dvd drive never wrote dvds above 1x. Even with decent quality 4x and 8x discs. It would always take atleast 1 hour to burn any dvds. So this morning I wanted to back some stuff up, so i went to the companys website, they didnt have any drivers but they had a firmware update, so i downloaded that. That went fine it alerted me that the firm ware update was successful blah blah. So then i went to restart and my computer gave me a stop error on boot up of winxp. So i was like F***. Then i took out that dvd rom drive, and it booted up fine, so i thought wtf ill just buy a new one who cares $30s. then went to look up that problem and found out that it could be some driver issues with nvidia. So I did what every one else would do, update those drivers. After i updated the nvidia drivers i reconnected the dvd+-r drive and it gave me another stop error. So i looked up all my drivers to my components and found out that there was an update for my bios. So i reflashed that. Yippee that was successful too. Then restarted without the dvd drive connected, and gave me a stop error. Wait WTF? why is it giving me a stop error now? So then i try safe mode, that works fine, i disabled a lot of start up, then restarted and still stop errors. Tried safe mode again. Boom, restart. YES! tried safe mode about 10 more times, nope pwn. So then i took out my ram, swapped them a good 10 times, nothin. So now i have no hope of being able to get into windows. All my files that im a dumbass and didnt back up most of are gone for the most part. So i go ahead and try some more tests so i can make damn well sure that i cant get my files back before i reformat. So i looked in the bios made a crap load of changes, disabled the ide for that damn dvd even if it wasnt connected. OH yea i forgot to mention that im running my windows on raid 0, pain in the ass because every time you do something u have to load those damn nforce drivers. Any way tried changing jumpers for the sata. Nothin. Then looked at the temp of my cpu, 58 C on idle FTW. So i was like omfg why god why are you doing this to me. So then i take my heat sink off and most of my compound is gone. So i take the rest of the compound off and replace it with my friends arctic silver. So then restart, and give some more tests and hope that the comp stops randomly restarting.
Every time it owuld restart sometimes it would pop up with a blue screen for .0000001 seconds and then restart. So i did the mode for win xp to not restart on error to read the stop errors, i got 3 of them:
0x0000008E
Page Fault in non paged area: 0x00000050
0x0000007E
So then i look up these errors and they all say: "Could be associated with drivers or firm ware. Also could be an issue related to hardware. A virus can also do one of these stop errors). YEY
After i look all these up i give the comp another restart and BAM!!!!!!! theres art on my screen. The video is all corrupted. cant even go to my bios any more. cant see anything any more. I restart it again in hopes of getting rid of that corruption. My comp is like F That and i start to smell burning. I figure out obviously its from my vid card. Take it apart and nothing looks scaved, i turned off the computer long before anything happened with it. So because im curious and im into computers i put it back in to see if i can smell anything again. Nope, no burning, fans are all spinning. So now Im about to call nu, the company that makes my dvd burner to curse and scream at them. But i was hoping to do some more research and hope that someone in this world could help me. My specs are as follows:
MSI k8n neo plat nforce 3.
3400+
raid 0 WD 2x80gb
bfg 6800gt
2x512 kensington value ram
nu 16x dvd-r+r 4x-rw+rw drive
CD burner lite on.
SOMETIMES i get to see my motherboard picture for the bios. Then it goes back into corruption mode. No clue, i think i did everything. Thanks for the help in advance.

BTW Hi, im metaP, im new here.
Welcome to the Forums :) I broke that up into paragraphs for you. And the important part first is specs:

My specs are as follows:
MSI k8n neo plat nforce 3.
3400+
raid 0 WD 2x80gb
bfg 6800gt
2x512 kensington value ram
nu 16x dvd-r+r 4x-rw+rw drive
CD burner lite on. [/quote]Cliff Notes
  1. Newbie doesn't realize that drivers are not necessary for his NU burner (its issue is probably either that it's a NU or that the controller it's on was in PIO mode), and updates its firmware and blows it sky-high.
  2. Then he updates his nVidia drivers and probably installs the SW IDE drivers?
  3. Then he updates his mobo's BIOS and *doink* it reverts to default non-RAID mode, pooching his RAID0 array. D'oh! :(
  4. Meanwhile he (speculation) gets his 6800GT's power cable unplugged somewhere along the line and doesn't notice until the card makes its displeasure felt by doing kaleidescope stuff.
RAID0 is definitely not your friend here. But try setting the mobo's onboard SATA controller back to RAID mode in the BIOS and see if it can re-identify the array.

In your mobo manual, go to page 3-13. See where they are, it's the Integrated Peripherals > Onboard Device > RAID Config menu. Make sure the SATA jacks that your drives are plugged into are set to RAID mode there, so you can try to get your RAID0 array back online. Now go into the nVidia RAID BIOS like they show on page 5-3, and take a crack at making a RAID0 out of them. Not much to lose at this point, huh? ;)

Good luck!

what are SW ide drivers any way? would this be one of the causes of stop errors?

They're an optional IDE/ATA controller driver that you can opt to say Yes or No when you're installing the nVidia nForce3 driver package, and the Yes/No is on a screen that looks like this, except I edited it. The next screen would ask if you wanted to install them or pass.

Some people use the SW IDE drivers and have no problems, some do have problems. If you don't install them, then Windows will use normal Microsoft IDE/ATA controller drivers instead, which are a safe bet. That's what I do, having tried both and found no noticable benefit to the SW IDE drivers despite what they say there.

I would also run memtest if you can get it to run. I've seen memory problems cause the specific stop errors you are getting. Might also want ot try 1 stick at a time. I've never heard of that brand before. Also, what power supply do you have?

i have been running this comp for a year now and the PS worked good up until now. Maybe they only last for one year? ;(

L&C is generally regarded as pretty darn low on the food chain. If you can take a gamble on buying an item, then a good-quality PSU might be a good bet, how about... one of these.

Yep, definatly could be a huge part of your problem, it could even explain why you were having problems with the dvd burner, and your video issues as well, because they all rely on the 12v rail from the power supply.

Smoke ?

check for blown/leaky/buldged caps (capacitors)
lost a msi board 8 months ago to bad caps
frustrating as hell cause you think its ram or video or drivers , even the psu

bad caps could be the cause

Just an update. I tested my video card on another machine and its toasted. Already sent out the RMA for it. I bought a new antec 500watt v2 power supply. Tested my ram and thats fine. Now i just need to fix the driver issue when new video card comes in. Stupid raid 0 ;(. Me and my roommate checked for bad caps and couldnt find anything. I think it was a power supply issue. Thanks guys for the advice.

update number 2. I just bought a cheap 9250 to do some more testing. My mother board smoked and fried. Now after i RMAd my video card i have to RMA my motherboard. I am really hoping it didnt affect any other parts. As soon as i turned it on, it smoked then i immediatly turned it off. FTL. As of right now i am extremely pissed and really dont know what to do, and i really hate waiting 2 weeks to get my computer back together.

of course it was hooked up. It appears that the frying was the line from cap ec40 which is near the main power supply input.

Sounds like the issue the whole time was a faulty motherboard. Something probably got fried on the board, which caused you to have other issues etc. etc. Sorry, can't be of much help though... good luck!

Hey guys, I just got response back from my RMA to MSI. They were very non curteous and told me that my damage was physical. The damage that was on the motherboard was electrical damage. They gave me a picture of a bent peice on the motherboard that was not there when I had shipped out the motherboard. They also made no mention of the burnt part near capacitor ec40. They mentioned the cannot rma the motherboard. When I tried to contact MSI I called 3 times, each time getting forwarded to a voice mail. So then I sent the RMA request online. When I left voice mail they never called me back. In any event I am hoping they will see the blown motherboard as apposed to the BS they showed me in the e-mail. As of right now I have not made contact once with a single human from MSI. That is very bad customer service. So in my e-mail I forwarded to my profesional coleagues of mine in hopes of dealing with MSI. I would like to thank every one here who has helped me with my issue, and I no longer reccomend MSI.
