Get a generic servertower
Drop the psu and get a 550W enermax
get a Abit TH7-II
get a P4 -1700 (toss in a mild OC to 1800)
dont forget a mild 1024Mb RDRAM-PC800
get 2 promise ULTRA 100
disable Abit highpoint crap raid
buy 2 maxtor 7200 rpm boot drives and use soware raid1 from OS W2KS
Get 8*100G WD1000BB 7200RPM and connect them to the 2Xpromise ULTRA 100
Get bestcrypt 7.04 and use 256-bit encryption on each drive
Use the new 8*100G virtual drives for your "stuff"
Voila
Best server I have seen in a long time
The P4 can decode 18MB/s so enough for your 100MB NIC

Hehe, I don't know much about encryption;) I'll read up a little bit.

"should be SCSI arrays"

I agree, but that would be incredibly expensive for 830GB.

Try going with four IDE RAID cards and setting up RAID 0 on the storage drives; the mirroring should keep your data relatively safe even with IDE's speedier drive fail rate.

If you had that server on a big enough pipe you would have a damn good topsite.

Hell, all I need is the pipe. I've got the server sittin right here. I wish I had a fat enough connection to host a CS server on.

You did say this a server?

Never, EVER overclock or use ANY setting (like memory at CAS 2) that could introduce even a *HINT* of instability in *ANY* file server!!! If the data is worth anything at all those drives should be enterprise SCSI devices and a tape robot should be employed for backups. A DS-3 line to a remote backup center is also recommended, and two SES personel shall be assigned to transport a full set of tapes to a certified EMP safe facility. Did I say data is important????? COST IS SECONDARY!!! SPARE NO EXPENSE!!!!! ALL YOUR HELICAL SCANNING HEADS HAVE BELONGED TO ME :p

Cheers!

that hd setup might work fine for an office of up to 100 people, but beyond that, I would really really really think about scsi. The promise ultra100 isn't even a RAID card I don't think. take a look at IO meter charts at storagereview to see the difference. the wd 1000bb vs maxtor atlas III 73 gb. Under heavy load fileserver pattern, the Atlas more than doubles the performance of the IDE junk. Also, I don't see a need for 830 gigabytes unless you need to share hours of uncompressed high res raw video with a lot of people.

the only problem is they cost about 750 / drive instead of 210. If you are serious about building a good fileserver though, the hard drive setup is the LAST place to skimp.

I would use intel celerons processors in a file server before I'd use IDE...

sharkeeper: Well its a 9% overclock and I can assure you all is running 110% by now. As I said kudos to Intel this time!

I'm afraid FBI will ask you to tell them the password for all your encrypted Jpegs and other stuff you got there, and you will have to comply. They will probably just plant a little spycam in front of the monitor, and will log all your keystrokes.. Or literally will log the keystrokes with a program...

For all you know, your MOM could be an FBI agent spying on you!
Don't trust anyone

P.S. Meet me outside of your house and bring $10 mil. in cash, or your dog gets it!

<< The P4 can decode 18MB/s so enough for your 100MB NIC >>

Huh? Decode what? If you are refering to its memory throughput, it's a "little" higher than that ;)

And my K6-2 233 box with 192MB of PC66 can do just as good as that P4, for about 1/50th the price.

Woho good joke I would have a good laugh if FBI would ask me for some passwords!

you know, u could drop in 8 x 160GB Maxtor drives...for a total of

1280GB...that's 1.28TB - wouldn't that be sick...the drives don't even cost that much

or use the onboard controller and the integrated southbridge one, put in a combo dvd/cdrw drive, and stuff in 7 of these drives for still over 1TB of storage.

makes ya wanna puke.
