You too can operate a oil refinery without approval for 22 years.

A oil refinery has been operating in Alberta for 22 years without any approval from the government. They finally got enforcement letters but they were not ordered to cease operating. I understand Alberta being friendly to O&G but this is ridiculous.

I wouldn't call it a refinery, it is a tiny, cheap fractionation plant. Just simple distillation towers (and storage).

Although it certainly still should be subject to environmental regs...

(edit: just for context, this facility was built for $9 million in 2001. A complex modern refinery is about 1,000x more expensive.)

Hmm, I had a guy who wanted me to help him get a pickup mounted lead smelter through permitting. I should have suggested Alberta.

What do you think 90% of oil refining is? Distillation of crude into various cuts...sounds like a refinery to me.
