I just saw a movie today "Men, Women & Children" and I have to say I was not expecting it. I was impressed and I saw things from "Juno", movie that got highly praised.

I personally thought that "Men, Women & Children" was a good movie, more so from what I was expecting. I went to read a bit about the characters and I see that the movie was not only a flop commerically but it was also a critical flop.

I dont want to focus the THIS movie as I understand there are tastes but do you guys think that most movie critics are idiots???

I liked Juno, but I couldn't sit through even just the trailer for Men Women and Children. That movie looks terrible.

No, but I think that watching as many movies as they do would change anyone's perception of movies somewhat. It's funny when critical acclaim can actually turn you off of certain kinds of movies. I find myself saying "clearly they liked that one because it's strange and artsy" or "clearly they liked this one because it focuses on a political idea they agree with". I'll usually avoid those movies because it feels like something other than simple competency and storytelling is being factored into their reviews.

It has nothing to do with Critics, it has to do with you liking something someone else does not. Not everyone has the exact same tastes, especially with movies.

Shows I'm old, but I miss the even handed discussions between Gene and Roger.

Most move critics are either jaded or shills or both.

I think critics have to be extra critical just to show everyone that they don't like everything and have "good taste"... I like just about everything one way or another, even the really shitty movies have some value to me.

Opinions. What makes a critic's opinion somewhat better is they have a much, much wider reference pool to base their opinion off of due to the fact that they watch tons of movies. Other than being more exposed to the media, we all enjoy different things. Find a critic that jives with your opinion and you will be rocking.

Of course they are; most humans are idiots. But on the whole, they do get it right more than they get it wrong.

I find Rotten Tomatoes is pretty accurate for most movies provided you look at both the critics and the users ratings.

No, they just all have different taste because they are humans. Find movies you love/hate, then read the reviews from people who also loved/hated those films. Once you have done that with a bunch of films/reviewers, you can then whittle the list of trusted critics down to a few who share similar tastes with you.

I liked the newest Superman better than the last one. If rotten tomatoes reversed the tomatometer scores of those two I'd feel that was about right.

I know everything, the critics know nothing, everyone else knows nothing.

Some are "idiots" some are well informed (about movies in general) people whose opinions that audience members will agree or disagree with...

Find the ones who can string some sentences together that mostly make sense and that seem to like the same types of movies you do then call it a day...

rather than waste other (well the ones who bothered to reply) peoples' time about whether an entire profession of people cannot control their bodily functions...

...

i do not pay attention to movie critics for the most part.

normal people "critics" are in the same boat though everyone for the most part thinks every movie has to be the greatest thing in the world or else it is terrible and sucks and nobody should watch it.

i find sites like rotten tomatoes 100% useless.

i watch a ton of movies in general, and i've just come to realize that i'm easily entertained so my opinions will agree and vary with many different people.

Most movie critics judge movies based on different criteria than the layman. They are trying to be objective in many cases and art in general is always very subjective.

I enjoyed reading all of the reviews I have read by Roger Ebert. I understand his reviews and I agree with them most of the time. His reviews are usually a good indicator of how much I am going to like a movie.

In any case, there are not really any critics that I follow closely any more. I do like some of the ATOT gang's reviews, but, I do not read many film reviews by professional journalists.
