You think I'm getting screwed? FedEx/RMA gone bad...

Hey. I bought a Geforce Ti4200 8x from gameve.com (yeah, I know, not the best dealer, but it was a great price). I was getting lots of artifacting and crashing, so I RMAd it. I shipped it FedEx ground last Monday, and they got it this Monday. I wanted to wrap the box, but apparently it's FedEx policy that no boxes can be wrapped. All of a sudden this afternoon I get an e-mail from GameVE:

Here is an important notice about your RMA#(my number)
Package Received / Process on Hold
receiving your package with no video card inside, please contact wilson regarding this matter.

Now I'm freaking out here, obviously. While not concealed, my package was well-taped and was safely in Fedex's hands. (And yes, I'm SURE I remembered to put the card in. I live in a dorm, so if it wasn't in the box I would have happened across it in the last week and a half.) So, is GameVE trying to pull a fast one on me and screw me over? Am I screwed out of $100? If the card was stolen, how is FedEx's claim process? Will they honor a printed e-mail order confirmation I got when I bought the card as a verification of price? I don't have the invoice on me (it was in the package, IIRC).

I'll definitely call first chance I get tomorrow, but was wondering if anyone has had such an experience, or if they think I got screwed, or if anyone has suggestions of what to say/plan of action. Thanks.

Normally you would take the video card, put it in the manufacturers box, then take that box and put it in a bigger box that has foam peanuts or some sort of padding inside it.

When you ship boxes with pretty pictures on them, you are appealing to human nature.

THEY WOULDN'T LET ME WRAP IT, AND WHEN I ASKED IF I SHOULD PUT IT IN ANOTHER BOX, THEY SAID NOT TO.

OK, my question was ifyou thought that GameVE might be trying to screw me over by lying to me. Obviously you all want to bash me for doing what I was told instead.

was the mfg box even taped up?

i don't see what's so bad about putting in mfg box. there's not much reason to think the contents of a box match the pretty pictures. in fact, i would expect people who don't ship often to use whatever type of box is laying around

hmm, on second thought the fact that you're shipping a video card to a computer company probably got someone to intrigued.

but then again, you should expect honesty from couriers. if not, places like netflix wouldn't work.

Then again, if someone had half a brain to read it was to a computer company, they'd also see the word "RMA" on the box and realize it's not functioning.

Has anyone made a claim from FedEx?

It's sad, but it seems like the courier services (USPS, FedEx, UPS) are becoming less trustworthy. About two weeks ago, I bought a laptop from MrCraphead that was sent USPS Priority w/ DC. It was never delivered, and the DC number says as much.

Don't be so hard on him - I'd have put it in the original box too. MOST people don't steal. I bet that you could do this a dozen more times without a problem. Just sucks that you had one.

I do agree that for safety's sake a bigger box would have helped, though, but that's neither here nor there. Hindsight is 20/20. Don't count your chickens before they hatch, and be sure to walk a mile in another man's shoes - but don't bite the hand that feeds you.

That was pretty stupid of you to send it in the manufacturer's box.

Agreed

*sigh*

Obviously the only thing most people around here are good for is ridiculing. In my original post, I asked 2 questions...
1) Does anyone think GameVE is trying to shaft me, and
2) Has anyone ever dealt with a FedEx claim, and am I right in thinking that there is auto insurance to $100

Instead, people choose to ridicule doing what I was told to do, which anyone and their mother could have done. I clarified that I did not come here to get criticized, I came here to ask if anyone had experience with the aforementioned questions. That really helps, as I get more insults.

Thank you everyone so much for your kind assistance.

1) It is either them or the carrier. My guess is that it was the carrier. Someone working at GameVE would see the RMA and would probably not want a broken card. Either way, there is not much you can do.

2) I have dealt with a FedEx claim. In my case, the computer I shipped was visibly damaged. I doubt they automatically include insurance (unless you upgraded the delivery to something that included insurance as part of the price). On top of that, FedEx has done what you contracted them to do. They delivered the box. Insurance only applies if the box was lost or damaged in delivery.

My gut feel is that you are SOL. A call to FedEx will give you more information than my gut feel.

FedEx Ground picked up brand new 19" HP monitor and they "lost" it.

Even though I put in a value of $350 in the shipping manifest, they only gave me $100 since they claimed that I never told them how much it was.

ok to chime in and post something relevent to OP's question...
i delt with fedex insurance before...its a bish...FIRST contact gameVE and see what they have to say for themselves. if its truely been taken make sure that you have confirmation of who recieved it and when and what condition the package was in. Second get your reciept take it TO THE PLACE YOU SHIPPED FROM not over the phone...since u handed it to a worker there they are responsible for it. Ask to see the manager and explain the situation. From there it will probobly be a couple phone calls to fedex and a few months before u see any return...
Good luck!

More of my worry is that this is status quo for the dealer... they see a box in that condition or something, they claim "There was no card inside!" so that they aren't stuck having to replace it. Especially since they don't have this card in stock anymore.

I contracted them to deliver the box without it getting broken into and stripped of its value. I'd say that's damaged material...

I tried that a couple weeks ago, but apparently it's FedEx policy now that you can't wrap it. I brought one in and they made me take it off (different store than the one with this, though).

GREAT. EXACTLY what I wanted to hear: the place (one of those 3rd party places, but it's the only one close) is inept. The worker had no idea what he was doing (hopefully the manager will be better), but they claim no responsibility for anything ever.

I'll call GameVE up and see what I can find out. Thanks for the posts on experience and suggestions.
