You think I can do a HS literature lesson using some RATM music?

I'm teaching a high school 9th grader lesson tomorrow. It's for an introduction to the lesson. Your thoughts?

It's a lesson on similes and metaphors.

Knowing how pussified things are becoming lately I can see some parent getting pissed off for using a RATM song in class... other than that, the subject matter in that song isn't really all that bad.. I get the feeling you're trying to make the kids think you're 'cool.'

No. Highschoolers are especially obnoxious about music genres, and you'll likely find about 80% of the class ridiculing your choice and making you uncomfortable, further distracting from the lesson. The only way around this would be to casually mention something like, "Anyone in here listen to the band RATM?" and if the response is very positive from a majority, or at the very least extremely neutral, you might move toward your original idea. Just don't jump into it like, "Hey guys, RATM made a song that applies to this! Here, learn about it!" or I can almost promise you'll wish you didn't.

Actually, most the students listen to hip hop, so I probably would be labeled as one of the few white guys in that classroom, even though I'm Asian. And being a teacher, I don't care about being cool to the students. I just like their stuff. Plus RATM has similes and metaphors in them.

99% of those 9th graders probably have no clue who Rage Against the Machine is.
