I'm going on a trip across country. Where can I legally use the LaserECHO?

The LE-20 is legal in every state except California, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Virginia, Nebraska, and Washington, D.C.

I'm not suprised to find this kind of information on an Audi news site. I don't see many German sports car (Porsche, BMW, Audi, etc..) drivers out there who are following the speed limit guidelines on the freeway! :)

Anyway, I've pretty much given up on radar detectors for weaseling my way of speeding tickets. Once the cops see one of those suckers stuck to your dashboard, they'll give you no mercy when they pull you over! Instead, I give a nice donation every year to my local police charity, and they give me a supporter decal to put on my car in return. I've been doing this for two years now, and haven't been given a ticket since then!

That's odd, the two times I've gotten tickets in this states it's been from radar. I didn't think they even used laser here.

If ya speed in VA, you most likey wont be clocked with either on a interstate or other highway. VASCAR does not use any kind of signal or beam. You don't know you have been targeted until it's to late.

The problem I have with Laser speed guns is thier ability to read a good speed:

They take a third of a second to read.
In this time, the beam can go from the top of your windshield to the front plate generating an error of 5MPH

The beams DO NOT stay at a pencil point, they deviate greatly.
A test of one gun showed that it emmitted THREE beams, all were about 6' wide at 1/4 mile (where they like to measure) and none were on center.

Optics are fragile.
Cops don't treat them like they would need to (as soon as they go for a drive they beat them to hell) to keep them dead on accurate.

To "pick out" a single car, you need to have a very good, and steady aim.
Can you hit a car with a handgun reliably at 1/4 mile? That's what you'd need to do.

IMO, radar is more reliable since it measures effectively the fastest moving reflection. Who's to say the laser beam didn't start on another car and move to yours in that 1/3rd of a second? Just too much error if you ask me.

You can't know if you've been targeted in Virginia period, no matter what they are using. Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia.

Radar detectors have been illegal in VA since the 70's IIRC (first moved to Langley AFB in 72.) VASCAR was authorised in the late 80s if my mind doesn't fail me.

The officer might suspect something if he gets a reading of 55 mph after watching you lock up your brakes for 200 feet.

Nice invention there. In my area, I'm lucky they only use K band, and they have just switched over to the KA band in the past month in some of the State Police vehicles. I always buy a top end Bel-Tronics, and I have always picked them up way before I ever get to them. I'm currently using the 970 LR model...awesome detector. No laser up here in NH yet, and likely not for quite a few years to come. Once I start getting laser alerts, I'll consider checking this gadget out. :)

Although I know that guy was trying to be serious, I just have to laugh. The whole way he was writing it, he sounded like he was absolutely paranoid of the police. I know there are some people that take pride in avoiding a ticket, but this guy sounds like he's going to need an Ambulance if he ever gets caught.:Q
