Good lord...cats probably attacked them in the past and got them real good.

My german shepard just nudges my cat out of the way with its snout and keeps moving along. The cat tried attacking once and the shepard was game, starting hopping around it like a bunny...the cat freaked out and ran.
 
Hah that's awesome....my dog's a giant pussy and could totally see her acting like that...now I want to get a cat just for my entertainment.
 
Those are good natured dogs. I had a chow that would kill cats like it was nothing. If we didnt have her on a leash she would kill cats, squirrels, and fight other dogs. Beat two hounds at the same time. Not sure she was so game to fight anyone at any time. When my parents brought her home as a puppy she bite me when I went to pet her. If you weren't family you would get attacked.
 
Cats are superior, and properly trained can be nearly unstoppable.

In one case our family cat defended us and killed a wild adult cougar, 100% truth.
