You see the worst of humanity when a mailing list fails

Some mailing list I'm subscribed to is fucked up so that every time someone replies to it, the thousands of people on the list get the email. So now I've about 200 emails saying "Please unsubscribe me" and about 50 saying "Stop emailing the entire list asking to unsubscribe, that is what is causing the problem." I don't think there is an administrator and the unsubscribe page doesn't work. Sure enough another moron emails everyone asking to be unsubscribed every couple of minutes.

Thanks for listening, PM me if you want to email everyone.

LOL I had this happen to me a while back. I forget what it was, think it was some vmware newsletter or something. I had to block it in my spam filters, was getting insane. The spam server worked overtime for a few days...

lol, yeah, I was on a couple mailing lists like a decade ago and it was pretty funny when the unsubscribe option broke a couple of times. The spam was annoying, but it was worth it to see the arguing and bitching.

Been there, put up with that. I'm surprised by the idiocy on a particular teacher's listserv. Exact same crap from time to time. One of the better ones was when someone offered to send a CD via regular mail & said "reply off the list with your mailing address." Dozens upon dozens of idiots replied with "I'd like a copy of the CD" (no mailing address.) And, those replies were quoted and replied to over and over again with "Me too! Thanks!" The response to that was exactly as you described... every other email was someone wanting the CD's, and the replies in between were politically correct, friendly attempts to get people to reply off the list and actually follow directions. A couple of us discussed the whole situation privately & off-list & came to the conclusion that there are a some tech-illiterate teachers out there who can't even figure out email.

The worst case was when one person replied to the entire list, and that person's coworker thought it was just sent to themself. That person replied with an "oh, by the way..." and a bunch of very confidential information. The original fool replied back with more confidential information. It went back and forth for 4 or 5 emails before the inbox filled up with everyone replying to those two morons (and the entire listserv) that they were sending their confidential messages to 100's of people.

People will sit through nearly an hour of TV commercials in a day, but god forbid an e-mail message shows up in their box. People are dumbasses.

BTW there is this thing called the World Wide Web now. Works great for this type of thing. Not sure why people still want to use email lists.

I had this happen back in college, but it was a mailing list that went to thousands of people, and it started a chain reaction where I was getting hundreds of emails a day.

I sent a reply email saying something like "Would you stupid fucks stop replying to the god damn list-serv? It isn't going to get your dumb-ass removed".

I got an email from a professor threatening to forward my email to the judiciary committee. I told to him to go right ahead.

People are idiots. I had a similar experience at my last job. It was easily 100 replies of either "please take me off this mailing list" or "please don't hit reply to all". One of the heads of technology replied in all caps DO NOT SEND OUT FURTHER REPLIES TO THIS MAIL and still another 20 or so responses went out after.

Most people don't know that you can email the entire Internet by typing *.* in the To: field.

People don't own DVRs that they use to skip every commercial out there? That's odd. I guess I'm the only one.
