Oh please, do grow up.

CRTs contain all manner of nasty stuff, brominated flame retardants, lead and other heavy metals and so on that shouldn't be released into the environment. Instead of polluting our planet with hazardous waste residue in a juvenile lust for destruction, turn that monitor in for recycling instead.

Give me a break, you sound like one of those nutty tree hugging, whale loving idiots.
Why don't you get a clue and read what happens when this shit is taken to recycling centers where it's shipped over seas and slave labor (children) using no PPE at all handle it.

You remind of these liberal fucktards that want to spend, spend, spend on hybrid cars and green power yet not give a shit who is going to pay for it!

The planet is fine, people are in trouble!

This is a fictional question, someone will always see it and take it before me.

I particularly want a good legacy PC with a parallel port and a floppy drive, but I usually ignore if I don't see discrete graphics card and I'd prefer to see a dedicated 3D accelerator. I almost always want the memory or HDD, though.

Monitor I would leave if it were crt type. PC I would take, remove the power supply, good for lots of things besides pc. I use an old ATX supply to power the router, modem, voip adapter, rather than having a bunch of wall adapter.

Would you care to detail how you do this?

wire switch to green wire & ground on the atx supply, splice +12 & ground to things needing +12, splice +5 & ground to things needing +5

a lot of devices will take a wide range of supplies (usually just have to open up and look at the internal regulator/switcher )

I might depending on where it is and what brand. Parallel port not important anymore, but there are some devices out there that still need a real serial port, such as card readers and writers (among other items)

Can't say for a store-bought PC, since I've built my own for more than 10 years now.......but hey, I've even seen new motherboards that STILL have parallel and serial ports. For the life of me, I don't know WHY, but they do. :hmm:

Sadly, there is a ton of commercial equipment out there that still uses a serial port to communicate. It's kinda annoying, actually.

True, but there is a reason for this. Serial is a low level communications protocol. For example, it can be used even if the computers OS has bugchecked/blue screened or whatever, as it can be accessed via the BIOS rather than OS. Debuggers especially need this capability, so that testers and developers can access kernel dumps and debug the break on the offending machine.

You can debug over USB now if the BIOS supports it, but it was a pain when I was running a test lab. Serial was so much more reliable and easier/cheaper to deploy then.

In a major steel mill, an IBM T40 was handling their machines. It literally was hanging off the rolling cart it was placed on by it's ethernet cable...the power cable has some slack.

Likewise, I have been to one of the top manufactering firms and their NT 4.0 system makes most of the world's product in that line up. They code everything in house and it doesn't talk to the internut.

I never waste my time on the garbage. I break into the house and take the new computer.

I have a laserjet printer that I still use frequently for gradschool which only has a parallel connection. My C2Q rig has a parallel port but I know when I upgrade I'm gonna have to get an expansion card or something so I can still use my printer since none of the new mobos have them.

PC: leave. my desktop is pretty state of the art, I can't imagine anyone would be dumping anything that would be an upgrade, and I couldn't be assed to try reselling it.

monitor: if it was larger than either of my current LCD screens, I'd take it home and see if it worked. unless it's a CRT, in which case I'd leave it there no matter the size.

Grab it.

Back in 05 I found a Pentium 4 2.26ghz, 1GB DDR and a Geforce ti4200, completely working with an XP reinstall, and I gamed with it for a few years. Not the fastest thing, but I held my own in the price vs performance realm because my computer as a whole cost me $30 and a few hours of my time to troubleshoot and set up.

Old computers are worthless - I have enough junk lying about without bringing more home.
