I've changed hardware a few times with my inspiron 4100 (just the RAM, but quite a few times), and I never got asked to do the activiation thingy.

I also just formatted the laptop and re-installed winXP home with the oem cd that comes with dell systems and never got asked for activation... not even the CD key.

Is this normal?

Yea it's normal. Microsoft released a commercial/corporate version of their OS that doesn't need the activation key. This was a big issue with the initial release of XP but I think was quickly circumvented to meet the requests of the majority I.S.

The only XP I've ever used where i installed it or changed hardware is the pro version distributed through the school. It doesn't ask for activation stuff, just a key, but there is only one for the entire school IIRC

Dells version of windows XP does not need to be activated. However, it checks the BIOS of the computer its being installed on, and it won't install unless its going onto a Dell.
