The first computer that I built was in 1999.
Cost about $1000 total.
$150 for a 10 GB hard drive
K6-2 or K6-3... I forget which. 400 or 450 MHz? Probably around $100 + another $100 or so for the motherboard
Another $100 or so for the 128 MB of RAM
$200+ for the 17" CRT
+ case, CD-RW, floppy drive, sound card, network card, video card, etc.

Too old to remember (seriously)!

My first PC was 8086 Tandy running at 7.16MHz with 384KB of ram and two sexy floppy (5.25") drives. Cost $1600+. Added a 20 MB HD later for $379.

This was in 1987.

First build....not sure. I know that my 1st 1GHz chip (AMD) cost over $500!

Atari 800 that my parents got me. It was an obscene amount of money, but I don't remember how much. Probably well over $2,000 for the computer and accessories.

The first computer I actually built myself was in 2000, a P3-700mhz w/ a 40GB HD. I think it cost around $1.2k total with a CRT monitor?

If I recall my first build was about 2k. Was an AMD 2000+ machine with 1GB of ram. Back then 1GB was HUGE. Our very first computer was 3k and was a pentium 3. It was top of the line back then, now I would not even run a DNS server on that lol.

My 1st build looked something like this. Before that I had a retail system I bought from B&M for 2.5K, it was a Pentium 75. Shit was expensive back then.

Ps. Wow, I feel so old.

Let's see if I can remember -- it was 1995:

CPU (the brand new Pentium 120 Mhz) -- I think it was around $1000
RAM: 8 MB of EDO RAM: $375
HD: 1 GB drive: $350 or so
Video card: Matrox Millennium 2 MB -- I want to say $400 but that might be high.
"Multimedia' kit w/ sound card and CD-ROM: $350 or so

I don't recall the motherboard cost but would guess about $300 -- it was an Intel Zappa board.

I spent 400$ on some custom built 1.4ghz athlon system in 2000 or so. First one I really built myselt was close to 2000$ if you include the UPS I got. I don't remember what the breakdown was, but it was a athlon 64, gig of ram, beastly large antec case, 9800 pro, raptor drive + 250gb 7200 drive, 900W/1500V UPS, audigy2zs, and a plextor dvd writer.

Hell yeah! That celeron rocked!

1999:
Celeron 300, OC to 450 (512 was never stable for me, my roommate was able to though)
Abit BH6 mobo
#9 2D graphics (I think)
3dfx/Diamond Monster 3D add-in
probably 384MB ram
Soundblaster Live!
some dvd add-in decoder
network, etc...

I'm guessing it cost around $800 to $1000 when it was built

My monitor at the time (sony e500) was almost as expensive as the system. Thing lasted me for years though...heavy sonuvabitch.

My first computer was a C64 (with DUAL 1541s and a 300 baud modem, fear me!), first PC was a prebuilt 386sx. I upgraded that with a Cyrix chip, then built a full Cyrix 486 system. I have zero recollection of costs for any of it.
