You, me, $2500. Let's build something nice.

Finally given the OK by the wife to start a-buying. Wife will be going into labor in the middle of December, and I'll have two weeks off after that, so I get two additions to the family this month.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

I do a lot of affiliate marketing and that's what this computer will be used for most often. When I'm working, I'll be running several programs at once - outlook, word, IM client, Firefox (with multiple tabs and windows open) and a few other programs. This is all stuff I don't really want to minimize, and so I want to go with a two 24 inch monitor setup so that when I work, I can spread it all out and see everything at once.

Sometimes, however, I want to play some games. I want to run whatever game I want at the native 1920 x 1200 (or higher) with as much AA as I can get on one 24 inch monitor. I want to do this while running 3 programs on the other monitor - outlook, firefox and one other script program.

I used to be a hard-core gamer. Now, with a wife and kids and a business, it all has to be a little less gamey and a little more tax-deducty.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

$2500. Much like a government office manager, I want to go right up to that limit, although if it's less I'll just buy a new desk with what's left over.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

United States. Newegg or Amazon.com are my preferred retailers, but I'm flexible as long as they're a reputable source. Don't like mail-in rebates.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.

Prefer Dell monitors.

nVidia. I especially like eVGA. I would like to stick with eVGA video cards.

I've enjoyed my current WD raptor (74) and would like another 10k drive.

OCZ has been good to me, but I'm flexible.

I will be picking up either a logitech g5 mouse or a g9. I was also thinking about a g15 keyboard.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

I already have a Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP. I wouldn't mind another one, but if it doesn't fit the budget, that's ok - there was another 24inch Dell monitor that was like $299 that I guess would work just fine unless someone told me different.

I also already have a Black Cooler Master ATCS 840 Aluminum Full Tower Case which I picked up from performance-pcs.com (http://www.performance-pcs.com...125&products_id=24707). Had the interior wires sleeved. Should be arriving on the 3rd of December. This is not part of the budget, because I already had it.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Yes, even started a few. Had no definitive budget then, however. Now, I do.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

I do not want to sit there for days trying to get another 5% out of my system, but as long as the overclocking is fairly simple, I'm up for it. I'd need a list of BIOS options to engage, so a mobo manufacturer with a fairly robust support forum would be great. I like DFI - current build is on a LanParty and it's been solid.

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?

Now, unless you know of some kind of deal that'll be happening in the next month.

I want some kind of environmental sound, too. I've been running the last 3 years with on-board audio and I was kind of blown away by how good games sound with positional audio. Hearing people trying to sneak up on you rocks.

This post follows the information guidelines requested in the sticky posts above, plus I have a budget and I'm picking it up now.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Yes, even started a few. Had no definitive budget then, however. Now, I do.

And on neither post were you particularly helpful.

You are forgiven.

Should I wait for the memory and motherboard to come back in stock or should I go with something else? Both those items I am debating seem to be the highest-regarded.

I would go for the Quad 9550 since it seems to be on par *almost* with the Core i7 920 and get a good motherboard. Something along the lines of the Gigabyte UD3P or the Gigabyte UD3R.

That is unless you want to run SLI for sure.

EDIT: Lets hope Blain never leaves Anand, because if he does, noone will ever know about something being posted already :p

But even that said, he does give out excellent information

EDIT 2 : You will absolutely love the Logitech G5. I have been using one for almost 2 years now and it is still excellent. But I bought mine for $84

You could always go all out and get the Saitek Cyborg keyboard as well. It is so far beyond excellent.

Yeah I've been using the old style Logitech G5. I wish they still had the old version, instead of the new blue/cracked colored one.

Newegg had this review up on the Saitek Cyborg - is the g15 much better? Anyone? Anyone?

Pros: Looks great, lots of lighting options.
Cons: Space bar is very impercise, lots of missed spaces require much rework indocuments. The side keys have limited useability as they can not be used to launch programs (why was this not thought of?) The media membrane keys will annoy the heck out of you, you always overshoot or undershoot. Kets in general feel spongy. Some of the silver coating on the WASD and spacebar keys is starting to wear off.
Other Thoughts: Anyone that sees this keyboard says WOW! Anyone who really uses it says Ugh! I am going to give mine to my nephew and get myself a real input tool. Hopefully an improved version will be anounced at CES.

I have used the G15, but I am now using the Cyborg...and imo.....the Cyborg is MUCH MUCH better. I have been using it for almost six months now.

And to be honest, I have NEVER EVER had a problem with my space bar. And quite honestly, alot of bad reviews on Newegg is usually *user error*. I like the metal plated keys :)

And for the metal plating wearing off....this has to be a myth. I have probably typed on those keys a total of 100,000 key strokes and they still look new.

I would be willing to bet my Cyborg keyboard that you won't regret purchasing one for yourself.

Looks like the second 24 inch monitor might just barely slip in there with the rebates. 2408 here I come.

You're spending $300 on a MB with an ALC 889 HD audio controller and buying a sound card too?

You might look at the Apple 24" LED backlit monitor for #2.

I'd drop down to a i7 920, you save HALF the money, and only lose 10% performance. That 10% is EASILY gained by overclocking it, even a measly OC to 3.0ghz is easy to do. Also, you will NOT notice the difference between a i7 920 and a i7 940. So save nearly $300, so you can definately get that second monitor.

I'd prolly get these gtx260's http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814150330 because they are clocked higher for the same price. Then again, if you're no hardcore gamer, just ONE of them will do for 1920*1200

I'd prolly also spend a wee bit extra on the PSU because it is modular and has a little extra power: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817371009

Go with the entry level i7, a good mobo, WD640 is comparable to the raptor, 6GB of ram, Vista x64 Home Prem. Your not a hardcore gamer so stick with a single 260. 6mos-year upgrade the video card and/or i7 if you need to. On-board is great now, all you need.

I second this motion, the 920 is BLAZING fast and is super easy to OC to 940 speeds!

I couldn't be happier with the 920, for only 300 bucks it performs better than the 1400 dollar QX9770!
