You may not like it, but this is what Peak Performance looks like

I always hated integrated multi component systems. When a component dies, it takes up space while doing nothing, though everything else works fine. You end up with a cassette deck sitting on top of the tv taking up even more space, cause the one that's provided quit. That may just be the gods telling you not to buy cassettes though...

I have Echo Dots all over my house (Amazon Alexa voice assistants with built-in speakers) & a Spotify account. I can just say "Alexa, play Coldplay" & it magically does it...no input switching, no loading media into source players...just a library of over 100 million songs available at a spoken word.

I used to do smarthome & home theater installations. The biggest code we could never crack was voice control, so no matter how much money people dumped into their system, the technology simply didn't exist until Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, and now voice AI's came along. And now the iPhone 15 has a customizable action button that you directly link to voice-prompted AI, so you can do crazy stuff like spoken foreign language to written English literally by simply holding down a button:

Or use it to replace Siri & literally have a voice conversation with AI instead! We live in crazy times lol.

Oh man I can just imagine drooling over this in the 90's lol. This was peak technology. You pull this bad boy out of storage today and everything still works. No need to download apps or make an account, it just works standalone.

I think we're talking 70's since I remember virtually gizzing myself over something similar.

Was there like only one manufacturer of those horrible little knurled knobs they used to adjust the TV display?

And that's exactly what bothers me about modern society. Case in point: Playstation just yanked hundreds of Discovery shows that PEOPLE PAID FOR:

Likewise, Elon Musk sold Tesla vehicles with the Disney+ app. He cussed out Disney for withdrawing advertising on Twitter & subsequently yanked the app. I know people who specifically bought Tesla vehicles because they have a front & rear screen with Disney+ to keep their kids entertained on long car rides & during charging.

TL;DR: Billionaire throws tantrum & removes advertised feature from end-user product. We live in insane times lol.

Yeah I hate how everything is based on apps and subscription (even if free) now, because these apps are only available in walled gardens and lot of them also require an account and device that is in a specific ecosystem. You're at the mercy of multiple companies for it to keep working. There are ways around it but it's not easy. Modern game consoles are terrible for that too. But in the day you plug something in, and it just works.

Suppose one could argue that old TVs won't work with OTA anymore just like app based stuff won't work anymore in the future, but in theory you could setup your own localized OTA network and still have it work. Those protocols are all standard.

Yeah SONY, Tesla, and Disney, I dislike them all as companies. I also dislike subscriptions. Streaming isn't ideal either, much better to actually have a digital copy saved somewhere on local media, as they can't take that away.

I have a REALLY hard time with software subscription services. I LOATHE paying for Adobe product every month...I used to buy their software & then I was "all set" until I wanted to upgrade to the new features on MY schedule. I do appreciate the fact that:

1. They have developers to pay salaries to
2. They release new features, like the AI stuff, which makes it value-added over time

However, Adobe achieved a record $19.41 BILLION DOLLARS in revenue in 2023, so it's just a giant money-grab:

And of course, it works, because we're all chained to the system!

Hehe I never paid for Adobe anything. I don't pay for M$ office either, I don't see the point. Though I do pay for Windows licenses.

I refuse to do any subscription software - or hardware. I absolutely hate the idea of it. Open source stuff is super important as eventually that will be the only choice you have if you don't want to go subscription based. What we really need actually is an open source car platform, since I think within the next 10 years it will be impossible to buy a car that is not subscription based. They are really pushing that hard.

I like when stuff works and doesn't break after only a few years. Assuming that monstrosity still works, then indeed it is peak performance.
