A lady walks into a store, brings 3 friends tells them to pick out a carton of cigs and charges it on her vision card. And there's nothing I can do to stop it.

Not sure what a vision card is - is it the same thing as what's used to purchase staple items for food in a grocery store? If so, how can they purchase cigarettes on that?

In NJ they get a certain amount of money that can be used for food only, and a certain amount of money that can be used for anything - it can be withdrawn as cash at an ATM.

She'd smoke whether she was on welfare or not; we can only hope that with the extra money welfare gives her the kid gets what he needs.

More messed up welfare:

Paying farmers to grow food while paying farmers not to grow food.

Paying ranchers to trash public land while paying ranchers to not trash public lands quite as bad.

Paying corporations to conduct R&D on technologies they were conducting R&D on anyway.

Paying tobacco companies to advertise overseas.

Giving performance bonuses to govt contractors who already charge outrageous prices while missing deadlines and performing shoddy work.

I think I'd rather see a 5 year limit on welfare. You can have it for up to 5 years. After that, if you can't get and secure a job during that time, too bad. I just don't think reproduction regulations are ever a good idea, but I could be wrong.

Does anyone remember ODB on MTV picking up his welfare check and laughing about it?

That's taking this to the P&N level :p

so what is stopping college students from simply signing up for welfare if it doesn't ruin your credit?

Nope, doesn't affect it.

You gotta be kidding :Q

Well it doesn't affect your ability to pay bills.

You're just paying it with mine and everyone else who is a productive member of society's money.

Well okay they are paying it with my money....it used to bother me...but I've been very cool with that lately.

It's hard to explain but...okay...

I don't have that cash.

But neither does anyone else.

If we all had that extra cash stuff would cost more.

So....I just don't think it matters, things work out.

Pretty sure they have requirements that prevent that...

So you don't have a problem when that person pulls up to the store in a brand new Escalade with 22" rims and pops out wearing nice clothes and and a designer handbag and then pays for her groceries with a welfare card or food stamps? There are so many crooks on our welfare rolls just milking the system it is sickening.

Yeah, I guess things just work out....for those stealing the rest of us blind.

If your parents claim you on their taxes, this would probably be the first. If you're independent of them, then sure, but there are going to be other things that you have to prove. You also have to show intent to want to work, and that if they swing some opportunities by you, that you'll be applying for them. It's there with a reason, and not to be abused.

I don't fully understand the welfare system, but that's what I've read about it.
