You know what sucks: ADD medicine rant

Nocturnal

Lifer
I have ADD and I currently take Ritalin for it. When I go to get the medicine filled I get looked at like I'm some druggie, big time. Last night I got off work at 8 PM, had about two things I still needed to do for customers. I ended up getting to the 24 hour pharmacy at around 12 AM. I did not have my medical card with me and usually they will look it up in the computer. The pharmacist asked me for my ID which I showed him. Then proceeded to ask me for my medical card which I did not have. I told him nicely and politely that I filled this prescription before at the same store but at another location. He told me in a very wise remark "Well I can't fill this, I NEED YOUR CARD."

And not only this instance too. I guess it's because I'm filling a prescription for Ritalin, a controlled substance. However, I should not get discriminated or shun upon because of this medical problem that I have. I could see if I was dropping off needles for new ones but c'mon, it's RITALIN for crying out loud! Prescribed from a psychiatrist who went to school to learn how to diagnose and properly treat patients!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ritalin is a Schedule 2 DEA substance, considered higher controlled than steroids, anti-anxiety, and on par with morphine. Schedule 1, the only category more serious, is reserved for illegal drugs with no medical uses.

The pharmacist was in the right here. Ritalin is very easily abused. I know, I try to buy adderall any time I can.

He's right. I've actually heard about kids SELLING their Ritalin prescriptions to other kids at school, so I can see why they'd give you a hard time about it. Sorry to hear about that, though.

Yes I know what schedule of a drug it is etc etc. It's just kinda sad that I get stereo typed for other people's mistakes.

I know of people that can make perfect fake IDs for $100 in anyone's name. How hard would it be for someone to steal your drivers license, replace the picture with one of his, make the fake ID and hack your prescriptions?

He was just doing his job. In their eyes, every measure that prevents it from getting into someone's hands it shouldn't is necessary.

Hmph.

I'm on the side of psychology that thinks ADD/ADHD is a largely fabricated "disease" perpetuated by overzealous media, lax research, and people looking to shift the blame for their short attention spans.

Not saying that it flat out doesn't exist, but the methods for detecting/diagnosing the disease are largely inaccurate and unreliable. I'd wager that only a fraction of the people who are "diagnosed" with it actually have a real medical problem.

Hell, I was diagnosed with ADD. Twice, by two different doctors. I took meds for a couple months before I realized that it was more my lack of motivation causing problems than it was this "ADD." I turned out to be right. Never had a problem since.

where can i get one? jk.

I'm not sure that there is a side of psychology which believes ADD/ADHD to be a largely fabricated disease. Research by countless cognitive psychologists does point to its existence, though perhaps not as clear-cut as we would like (just as with any psychological disorder). Heck, it's possible that your lack of motivation is indeed caused by a mild form of attentional deficit, who knows. There are many, many ways in which your ability to properly focus your attention can be hindered, even in "normal" individuals.

In this case, I'd say the pharmacist was in the right to ask for your insurance/medical card. The only portion of the situation I'd have a problem with is his response, though is it possible that because you have a predisposition towards thinking that others look at you differently because of your condition, you actually misread/over-reacted?

ADD medicine is bogus. If you have ADD, taking stimulants just makes you annoying... seriously.

You are an idiot and an automatic asshole to anyone that takes medication for ADD. Before I started taking medication, I had trouble remembering I needed keys to drive my car.

BTW, I'm still now 'allowed' to take ritalin because so many people abuse it. They'll happily prescribe me on any other medication, though.. But ritalin always requires more tests.

ADD medicine isn't bogus, as it definitely has effects. But there is research showing that ritalin, in reality, may have little to no effect on the ADD/ADHD itself (more of a placebo type deal).

On the less extreme side, there are numerous studies showing that various types of educational techniques and non-medicinal therapies can have similar (or in some cases more profound) effects on ADD/ADHD as ritalin.

The problem with all of this debate over whether or not ADD really exists is because at the moment there really is no effective way to diagnose ADD. All that can be effectively diagnosed are the symptoms, which can happen for a large multitude of reasons. For example, my little brother was diagnosed with ADD. We started giving him medication for it, but it didn't help. We switched between several different meds, all with no effect. Finally we took him to an endocrinologist who told us that because my little brother is a vegetarian who doesn't eat eggs or very much cheese he was suffering from accute protein defficiency, which was causing the ADD-like symptoms. We started having him drink those protein shakes for people on the Atkins diet and his symptoms started to disappear instantly.

Anyway, what I think is that ADD is in fact a real disease, just not nearly as common as it's made out to be. The only real way to know if someone has ADD is something they have to figure out for themselves. Try getting an 8 year old to do some deep introspective examining of his thought patterns; it's just not gonna happen.

Oh yes, I have ADD. How do I know? Because if I don't take my medication I cannot stay focused on one thought. You know how your mind starts jumping around from thought to unrelated thought right before you nod off to sleep? That's how my mind is unmedicated. That is how I know I have ADD.

You know, they have medications now for paranoia, too. (JK)

You're lucky that Ritalin works well for you. It doesn't for everyone. It's a very powerful drug, which is why it's such a pain to get. BTW, it's tricky for MD's to prescribe, too. They get checked up on how much they prescribe, where the scrips are filled, etc. Now that you know how important the routine is, take the easy route and follow the rules.

ADD isn't something you "believe in". If it makes you (whoever) happy to put down other people who are trying to improve themselves, that's your problem.

I have ADHD and OCD, and used to take Ritalin and a bunch of similar stuff. I have not taken any in 6 years. Now that I am in college, I am seriously considering taking it again.

hmm

for all you people that believe add is not a problem, give me a break. i have lived with someone for years and i can tell when they take/miss a dose. it is a REAL problem, some of you migh have been misdiagnosed.

just out of curiosity, what is a Medical Card?

the person i live with just needs to take a perscription script to the pharmacy and anybody can pick it up for them...

Perhaps you should do a little reserch on what it is you are actually taking.

I used to take Dexadrine. Wow, that was some powerful stuff.

You should be happy he's making you give him your card... he's doing his job, cause this medicine is NO JOKE>

Edit: I do belive ADD is a problem. However, I think it also is WAY OVER PRESCRIBED. For example... 3 yr old kids? Chirst people, they are just kids being kids. However, my quick example is from back in high school... prior to medicine 1.6 gpa. After meds... never below a 3.0. College I stopped taking it because I don't like thinking I have to rely on drugs to keep me smart. haha, yea, I failed out.

But now that I'm doing something I really enjoy, it's not that difficult for me to pay attention.

The meds work... but it's over prescribed by parents that don't know how to control their kids.

You know the best drug in the world?

Valium, I love that stuff. Wish you could buy it over the counter then I'd be HAPPY all the time 😀

Uhm, the card has nothing to do with the prescription except for how much I should actually pay.

The main part is that I had my ID which I did bring and did SHOW him. The card has nothing to do with releasing the drug to me. I could have paid the full price of whatever it costs and I would have gotten it either way. The only reason he asked for my card is because my medical insurance has a co-pay program in which I pay less than the retail price of the medication is.

Thanks!

Really? What does that stuff do to you? I've afraid to take that kind of stuff.

An antianxiety and sedative drug used extensively in the U.S. It is used to treat status epilepticus, acute cocaine poisoning, and a variety of anxiety disorders. Prolonged use may cause dependence or tolerance.

RxList

EDIT: It's in the same class as Xanax, Klonopin, Rohypnol, among others. I don't recommend driving on Klonopin 😀 😕
