You know, I'm unhappy it happened but glad it did at the same time

My brother-in-law is a senior in high school and prior to his junior year he really wasn't involved in anything and sat around alot. He had tried football his freshman year but he had never done a single athletic thing in his life and so he played one year and quit the following spring. Then he got into theater the second half of his Junior year and was an immediate success. Everybody was raving about how great he was and he was suddenly very popular at school. He had started working out and eating healthy and dropped alot of weight.

His mother, his sister, and me all thought this was a good thing and supported him. Unfortunately, while this has been a good thing it has been a bad thing too as the size of his head has just exploded and he's started to become very selfish, unthinking, and irresponsible. The culmination of has been hitting somebody else's car in the parking lot at school and not reporting it immediately and then this past weekend staying out overnight at a friend's without asking permission or telling anybody. His mother was worried sick over what had happened to him.

Now, he's had a bug in his head about going to college in New York City (NYU specifically) and we've all been on him about applying to different schools especially here in Georgia since he is eligible for the HOPE scholarship that pays his tuition in full. Well, he's only applied for NYU and he's only applied for one scholarship. He'd rather go out with his friends everynight than do all that and has pretty much expected for his mother or someone else to take care of stuff for him. There is no way his mother can afford to send him to NYU on her own as she is barely getting by while running a restaurant and hair salon.

Well, he finally got his letter from NYU yesterday and he was not accepted. When my wife called him I could tell just by the tone of her voice that he didn't get in. He's been pretty depressed since then. He pretty much expected that he would get into NYU...no doubt about it. Now he is going to have to start applying quickly to other schools pretty late in the game and that is only going to hurt him. But, he needed it....badly. He's been so irresponsible lately that it has driven us up the wall but there isn't much my wife and I can do about it because he's not our kid. Hopefully, this will be a wakeup call for him. We'll have to wait and see.

Cliffs:
- Brother-in-law was pretty uninvolved and not all that popular in high school
- Brother-in-law joins theater the second half of Junior year to much success and popularity
- Brother-in-law head triples in size and becomes very irresponsible, unthinking, and selfish
- Brother-in-law expected to get into NYU and did not apply to other schools. NYU declined him
- Brother-in-law is now depressed but we are hoping that this serves as a wakeup call to him

(phew! that was alot)

yea, he needed it. dont feel bad. I thought i was a shoe in for university of illinois, and I didnt get in. that was a big ego check.

I'm assuming you married his sister, in which case just make lewd jestures at him while your wife isn't around. Think Brodie from Mallrats.

How do you not get into NYU? Its not Ivy league or anything, his grades must suck.

Actually his grades are all As and a couple of Bs. He's taking almost all Honor/AP courses too. I never asked about his SAT or ACT. He went up there a month or so ago for an interview to get into the school.

he can still apply to other schools. even the good ones have the deadline in jan 1st or later.

well, you make him sound like a dumbass tho.

Do some more research about the college. It's pretty darn hard to get into for most people. About the same as Cornell, depending on if you apply to the Art or Business school.

NYU is close to top of the heap if you're looking into theater. Very competitive. A huge percentage of applicants don't even get to the interview stage.
