You know if I was head of the democratic party...

I would capitalize on the recent downturn in opinion of the Iraq war as well as Bush's approval ratings and focus on regaining control of one or both houses in Congress. That way they could block Bush's more radical policies, as well as blunt the chance of a very conservative judge being put on the supreme court.

Focus on the moral values that the democrats have always had....that is taking care of society and the citizens of this country. That will hit home to alot of people, red or blue state.

Leave gay marriage to the states....that is the best you can do at this time frame. Pushing the issue anymore will just entrench the vocal critics even more, and make the possibility of a constitutional ammendment even more plausible (which scares me to death).

As for abortion, gain control of congress and you can effectively stop any judge conservative enough to overturn Roe v Wade and force bush to pick a moderate.

Well, the problem is most of this country are moderates.

However both parties are controlled by extremists.....what decided this past election is which side could bring out the bigger share of their nutcases...and the republicans won.

So when you push extreme issues, you alienate most of the country.

So, what we have now is a war between the left wing looneys and the right wing fundamentalists.

Lovely.

You dont think the dems are trying to take back the house/senate?...plz post reasoning why you thing they are not trying.

The dems know that this term will make or break the neocon minset. If they help bush have a successful term, they will in effect show that you can lower taxes, rage wars, etc with no consequence. I think the dems have written off the next 4 years and preping for a slow shift to power in 2008. Both in terms of houses and the presidency.

Ya...the democrats wrote off the south in the past election, and they lost.

Writing off the next four years is just stupid. That's what my original post was about....NOT writing off the next four years and actually trying to make a difference TODAY.

...and as stated above, as long as people keep espousing extreme views, the republicans will keep winning. There are more conservative extremists than liberal ones.

Who wins the next election will come down to which side drops the extremist ideology.....if the democrats would cut loose MoveOn.org, Michael Moore, Dean, etc....they would win in a LANDSLIDE in 2006.

It just comes down to what kind of democratic party people want. One will win, one will lose.

Nobody stays in power forever, and this Republican majority in Congress will eventually fade away. I don't think the American public likes the idea of one party in complete control anyways. Seems we get more done with true bipartisanship in Congress.

I agree...somewhat.

i do think that both sides are painted as more extreme than they really are.
it is this bickering and fear mongering that pushes the politicans further apart.

cheers to you realizing that most of the country are centrist 😉..hehe

I'd agree Sudheer.

Honestly I think it's for the best to have one party have Congress, and the other the presidency. Keeps alot of the pork and more outlandish bills from going through.

However, keep in mind the democrats controlled congress for over 50 years......with a sprinkling of republican presidents along the way.

I think it is all how you present yourself. At the moment the US is far too extreme and should come into line with the rest of the first world. Americans dont care too much for the issues but the person. The dems need someone with charisma and electability (not in the kerry sense, but the clinton sense)

I usually vote republican (except in this last election...but i'm not even going there...), but man there just was something likable about ole Slick Willy

lol...good luck gaining 35 house seats or 6 senate seats...won't happen.

I know...probably not.

But taking the attitude of "screw those stupid red states!!!" isnt exactly the best one to have.

Many states vote for congressional reps independent of presidential candidates....in addition many of the red states went red by a narrow margin.

I live in Alabama and our House Rep for Huntsville is democratic....so it is possible.

The conservative Republicans in Colorado got smug about things and the voters upset the balance and put the Democrats in charge.

The country could easily turn things around in the congressional elections in 2006. Our President and his followers are on a post election high, but the problems still remain.

That high has quelled pretty quickly... Bush's approval rate is less than 50% and the disapproval in the war in Iraq is rising quickly. The door is opening for 2006 for the Democrats, but the Dems have done a terrible job focusing their platform and strongly voicing it.

Only a judge can overturn Roe v Wade. At this stage of the game it is like putting the Genie back in the bottle.

The Democratic Party needs to quit listening to the ultra liberals who keep irritating the voters in the center and all of the old-time Traditional Democrats that are jumping ship to vote republican. Over 50% of people still claim they believe in God. These people take offense to how they are treated by the so-called progressive God Hating policies they see in place in the Democratic Party.

so basically the dems are trying to do everything they can to ensure that the economy sucks, and the war goes badly, so that they can get elected? thats just fvcking great.

I don't know how you propose they do that.
Who will stand up for gay rights and women's rights?

Those are the two issues at work from a "moral perspective"
These are not issues the dems should bend on...just allow time to win the battle for them.

Please explain why the dems should change position on these issues and how.

The dems need to separate God and these hot button issues. You can be religious but maintain human rights.

The dems have no power...everything is going to hell on the republicans watch.
If you wanted the dems to help you would have voted for them...
They will help when they get power.

I think what he's trying to say is that this is the "put-up-or-shutup" time for the Republican party. Right now, there are NO excuses for them to get things done.

See the problem stunt is the perception that conservatives dont want gay rights or women's rights.

They do. They just want marriage left as defined between a man and woman.

Marriage is not a "right", but a state and religious privledge.

where I have a problem is denying benefits to gay couples if heterosexual couples are offered the same benefits.

That would only happen if people got their Brains back.

That won't happen with the proliferation of both the Religious and Political Brainwashing.
