What's in the space before the universe occupies it ?

I assume the space doesn't exist till the universe gets there .. but wouldn't that violate
the 1st law of thermodynamics ... since the void cannot contain energy (potential) till the universe gets there ?

Not sure what is out there but my personal theory is it is an "absolute nothing" which is responsible for the continued acceleration and expansion of the universe. Kind of like holding a slinky in one hand and letting the other end just fall.

yes, the entire "begining of the known universe" thing gets a bit tricky. people usually just have a :beer: and some pizza when someone starts asking for details so they dont have to worry about it

There is no void, there is no space, there is nothing. The universe is not expanding into an empty void. It's simply expanding, the laws of thermodynamics don't apply outside the universe because there is nothing there for them to apply to, no void, no vacuum energy, nothing. It's not like you could go to the edge of the universe and say in 2 minutes the universe will occupy the space over there, because "over there" does not exist yet.
