LOL @ calling South Korea a "fascist hellhole". :D So are regulations that encourage the use of reusable bags fascist, communist or both? I really wish you'd keep your rants consistent.

And I don't think stores would care about the small minority (i.e. you) who would rather drive over to Costco for everything rather than paying maybe 50 cents for bags or using your own. Enjoy your five gallons of ketchup, by the way.

haha obviously the fascist comment was made in jest.

I may be the minority in that I'd actually go somewhere else, but I'm certainly NOT the minority in that I don't like this idea - most of us are not eco freaks, and plastic bags are not destroying the earth nearly as much as about a million other things anyway.

Per your last comment - you've never actually been inside a Costco, have you?

South Korean grocers charge 50 won a bag, which (used to) work out to about 5 cents. It is true that you have to separate your garbage by type. Most public places were just food vs. non-food, but at the apartment I was living in, I had to separate it further by paper, plastics, cans, etc.

It makes sense for the country, given that its area is a little bigger than Indiana but has almost 50 million people. Real estate for landfills is extremely limited. When I came back to the U.S., I almost felt guilty for throwing everything away in one can.

Just had to give you a hard time on the fascist thing. :)

We go to Costco a lot. And there is absolutely no way I would (or could) go there for absolutely all our groceries. You may save more in the long run (two bottles of ketchup there are cheaper than two at Safeway), however it would still take at least a year for me to go through that much plus I have to store all the extra bottles somewhere. PITA. And if I need some soda, beer and chips for a game I'll go to Safeway and be back in 10 minutes. Not only would it take at least three times longer at Costco but I'd have to get a case of each. No way.

As long as I get one free bag for any meat products, I hate getting chicken juice on the rest of my food.

that is some seriously twisted justification. same as saying serial killers are not responsible for killing nearly as many humans as terrorists so who gives a flying fuck about them. the fact that you used the term "eco freaks" shows how out of touch and irrational you are.

please tell me my sarcasm meter is broken and that Deeko is not actually that ignorant.

Listen hippy - its the opposite that needs to be justified. You hippies with your long hair and your lack of a job want to charge us hard working Americans an extra fee for using a plastic bag. It quite literally is an "eco tax". The plastic bag does not cost that much.

Just because I have better things to do than hug trees all day does not mean I'm "ignorant". The impact of plastic shopping bags on the environment is negligible. Keep it in Whole Foods and leave the rest of us alone.

And really? The effect of plastic bags on the environment is negligible? I'd like to see some numbers.

Umm, half the grocery stores in Toronto have been doing this for decades already. No Frills, Price Chopper, Food Basics, all have been charging 5 cents per bag for as long as I can remember. Only now the higher end more expensive stores are putting this into effect (Metro, Loblaws, Longos, Sobeys, Fortinos) did I miss any?

It's a good thing, less waste. People always buy the reusable stronger bags and never use them.

I support a ban on bags outright.

Costco has done fine without them and so can everyone else.

Recycling is BULLSHIT

Deeko, I only have one word for you: AWESOME! :D

If some store started charging extra for plastic bags, I won't go there anymore. If all stores started doing this, I will start only buying what I can carry, driving it home, and driving back to buy more. That will cause a MUCH more massive effect on the environment than giving me a few lousy plastic bags for free, PLUS it's a giant middle finger to the stupid eco-nazis.

Or you could just get a reusable bag.

No, it's much more fun to waste time and money being flippantly arrogant.

Possibilities:
- This person is just being another Internet tough guy.
- This person has lots of free time (and gas money) available that he enjoys wasting.

I don't look at recycling so much from the standpoint of reducing landfill usage. I think of it in terms of energy. A lot of power goes into mining and refining raw materials into something usable. So why not spend less energy and reclaim the refined materials, and reprocess them back into useful forms? Metals especially are easy to recycle, and the energy savings are immense. Glass too - sure, silicon is all over the place. But it too needs to be refined and processed to get glass with the desired properties. Energy resources are finite, and electricity costs money.

Recycling stuff domestically also means that we need to import less. Those who hate recycling also seem to be the ones who are more isolationist and xenophobic. "They took our jerbs!" That sort. Use more of the resources that are already in circulation here, and you need to import less. Less energy is also used, which lowers cost, which makes domestic products more competitive.

Yup we have this here. It's been around a couple of years now at some supermarkets. I hated it at first but today I actually took some old plastic bags with me to avoid the fee - there is no way I would have done this before - so I guess it's actually encouraging me to recycle.

They're incredibly wasteful when you think about it and they end up fouling the landscape for years. Hopefully someone comes up with a properly disposable bag, maybe made of a new type of paper or biodegradable polymers.

I love it.

The hippies in Seattle have caused me to drive to work. My apartment, and my job, are right along multiple bus routes. I have a free bus pass. I started driving to work because A) its still more convenient and B) Someone at work started a campaign to take away the parking reimbursement because its "against the green initiative". Basically, his intent was to foil people like me - but there are a lot of people that CANT take the bus who would get screwed. So, out of spite, I now drive to work every day. I drive home for lunch too.

Take that, hippies!

Honestly, I'm not too amazed by the idea. In the next 10 years I think we will see quite a few more processes like this put in place. I'm not a tree hugger by any means but certain countries make a much larger impact on the environment than others.

Any store that take this step will lose my business.

This.

BTW did you watch the Penn and Teller episode, Jeff? Recycling is not only bullshit, but it WASTES energy. Go ahead, watch it. I dare you.

I'm sorry that you're a hard working American who hates to pay for 5c for a plastic bag. The problem is that your being hard working man doesn't automatically give you a right to pollute. And no, I'm not saying we shouldn't pollute at all and live peacefully with nature. What I'm saying is that if there's smart way to reduce pollution, I'm for it. I find this +5c per plastic bag attempt is a good try that will work.

No, I'm not a tree hugger and I'm not a hippie (I don't know why someone shows his interst in saving/preserving nature, he's considered to be a tree hugger/hippie. I guess it's because some people are just ignorant.) In fact, if you've ever taken Econ 101 level courses, you must be familiar with the term "incentive." That's one of the important forces that drive economics. I could go on and explain this but whenever I talk to someone who chose to be ignorant and be all upset like a teenager going through puberty, I can't help but to wonder if I'm reading Shakespeare to a cow.

Please calm down so that we'd take you seriously. In other words, be a cowboy, at least, rather than a cow.

You'll never shop at Costco then or any other warehouse retailer.
