I will not shop at those stores then and I will make sure they know exactly why - it's bullshit. And don't scoff at it being a gubment idea, it's already being proposed by a lot of cities/states. This shit is getting out of hand. Then again gubment says we can't have our house at 70 degress and drive SUVs anymore, no those times are over.

1. It isn't a government tax because the money doesn't go to the government, it goes to the retailer.

2. It's good for the environment because it "encourages" people to use re-useable bags instead of throwaway, always a good thing -- regardless of whether said bag is recycled or recycleable.

3. It's not forced because you can still pay a small fee and get the throw away bags.

I'd like to pretend this is an environment related decision, but that's just sugar coating it, it's a monetary decision on the side of retailers. They want to make money off of a service they've been giving away for free.

na, it's Miller's idea of green agenda. There was already a few supermarkets that charge for plastic bags.

err, it's going to be ALL the stores, not just supermarkets.

They should just get rid of free plastic bags period. When I see someone ask for a bag when they bought lip balm or something I just shake my head in dismay at our "bag culture"

Yes, I'll go to a bagless bulk store before I'll pay 5 cents for bags or use reusable bags.

 You'd rather go to a bagless store than use your own bag? That makes no sense.

A number of cities/towns in the US do this already.

Absolutely. They want to implement this BS, they lose my business. Simple as that. We call it "capitalism."

are the plastic bags really that bad if you recycle them? seems like they'd be easy enough to just melt down and re-shape.

they mostly end up in landfill.

iirc 1% of them get recycled.

that's a shame.

my local grocery store has a bin right in front of it for recycling bags... after I get home and unload my groceries, I stuff all the plastic bags inside another bag, hang it on my kitchen doorknob, and take it with me the next time I go shopping to recycle.

Not as a mandatory fee.

Many grocery stores voluntarily deduct $0.03 if you bring a reusable bag, but I'm not aware of any other jurisdiction in Canada that has mandated a fee for all retailers.

Toronto is doing something similar, except we get garbage bins of different sizes. You pay x for y size bin.

agreed, this is just a way to incentivize it on the front end to keep more out of the landfills.

It's a pain to get used to but once you see it as normal it's no problem. I keep around 10 cloth bags behind the seat of my truck. For awhile I would forget them when I go into the grocery, but now I grab a few as I go in depending on what I am buying. Not really anything worth complaining about.

this.

we also reused shopping bags to give out canned goods and turkeys at the food drive i worked at a couple weekends ago.

You don't have to buy the bags. Just walk out of the store with your stuff in the cart like you do at Costco. It's an option. You'd rather a store not give you the option? Again, makes no sense.

I recycle my plastic bags. I think that is more eco-friendly than throwing away decomposable bags.

Absolutely, what's not to understand? I don't like that the store is doing that, so I'm not giving them my business. It can't be any simpler than that.

Whole Foods has been taking off 5 cents per saved bag of groceries off the total cost. I just bring my backpack to carry the groceries in anyways since its too heavy to carry stuff back to my apartment.

The main grocery store I use does the same general thing, $1.50 for the bag and $0.05 off per bag used. I still get a few plastics here and there for use around the house, but not nearly as much as before.

I don't see the problem. I'd rather pay $1 a bag and just buy 10 bags and be done with em.

again - this wouldn't affect Costco because they sell food in large quantities/boxes and thus don't have bags of any sort. They would be unaffected by this law. Therefore I would not be going to a store that is affected by this change.

You don't like that a store gives you an option but rather take it away from you by not offering bags at all?
