I use those plastic bags for my garbage. If I started using reusable bags, I'd have to spend on real garbage bags. From a financial and environmental point of view, it doesnt make sense for me.

This is nothing new, in parts of the world.

I think it's a brilliant idea, saves the planet as well. Certain stores will have reusable bags that you can purchase to... reuse while shopping. There's absolutely no reasons why we should waste all the resources into making all these bags, paper or plastic.

You really think 5 cent bags is going to save the planet? All it will do is introduce a regressive tax on the laziest ring of a nation. All this is govt grabbing more wealth in the name of the envrionment. You will note they didnt ban the bags. Instead created a new revenue stream.

fixed.

Agreed. It's only a revenue stream if they don't allow people to bring their own bags. The fee is just a way of saying that you're purchasing the bag.

No Frills (in Toronto and suburbs) has always charged for bags. We either used to bring our own bags or use their boxes. I guess this fee is on top of their fee.

I saw an article referring to an East Asian nation (the first world ones are probably all doing it by now) in which residents had to pay a fee per garbage bag, and only the officially sanctioned bags would be accepted for pickup. Really limited trash output, and encouraged the citizens to extensively recycle.

One of the local grocery chains has a reycle bin for the plastic grocery bags. IIRC, they get used to make milk jugs or something similar.

Lots of the local stores already give a 3 to 5 cent per bag discount...and they all sell cloth bags and other types of re-usable bags.

not in Toronto :)

If you have a No Frills, then yes it was.

Mountain Equipment Co-op donates 5 cents if you refuse a bag. The funniest thing is one time I bought a backpack, and asked for a bag; the cashier wasn't disgusted, but there was definately a negative vibe. Ya, there's no excuse.

of course ikea is like this, but a lot of other places do this now too...well reusable bags at least, not the 5 cent bags yet.

My local ikea no longer has any plastic bags at all. They stopped having them about a month ago. You can buy their big carry bags if you need a bag.

I used to grab 50 of these and use them as trash bags in my room and the bathroom. They're sturdy and larger than the 99 Ranch ones, and not crappy like Safeway bags. Oh well =[

Great idea. Rather that then raise prices. I bring back my own paper bags so I think this is perfectly fair.

Those bags suck and are a pain in the ass anyhow.

This would cause me to shop elsewhere if a store implemented it. If a government implemented it, it would cause me to vote for a lot of new politicians, and do my shopping at Costco.

Yes, I'll go to a bagless bulk store before I'll pay 5 cents for bags or use reusable bags.

are the plastic bags really that bad if you recycle them? seems like they'd be easy enough to just melt down and re-shape.

It's an incentive. Same thing with gas guzzler tax.

What? That doesn't make sense. Someone that dislikes a law like this almost CERTAINLY dislikes the governments in Europe.

1. It isn't a government tax because the money doesn't go to the government, it goes to the retailer.

2. It's good for the environment because it "encourages" people to use re-useable bags instead of throwaway, always a good thing -- regardless of whether said bag is recycled or recycleable.

3. It's not forced because you can still pay a small fee and get the throw away bags.

I'd like to pretend this is an environment related decision, but that's just sugar coating it, it's a monetary decision on the side of retailers. They want to make money off of a service they've been giving away for free.

Who's getting the money collected by this? The store or the city? Does this mean they're going to have to start hiring more by-law officers?

I keep the bags and use them in my bathroom as trash liners. The normal size from Wal-Mart and such fit the small bathroom-sized trash cans very well.
