House I'm looking at would be ~$175k. The P&I payment for a 30 year would be $939/month.

Property taxes would come to ~$500/month. Taxes at more than 50% of your mortgage payment.

And the scary part is that even with a fixed rate mortgage, so much of your payment is driven by taxes which will continue to go up. If taxes go up 5% a year, after 10 years that will be an additional $3K a year just in taxes.

That is downright robbery. I bitch about the 1% property taxes I pay here in KY. With a rate that high you had better not have any state income tax.

There's something very wrong when just owning a home you pay enough in taxes to buy a 30K auto or a boat.

I do. I like the weather, but not the liberal tax and spend mentality. Work and family are here though.
I was commenting on your thread title. I think the love should be switched to hate.

And I hate it too. I am stuck in the funked up financial mess of NYS also.

Illinois is similar. A $1900 a month P&I payment will have a tax bill approaching $800. And yes we have state income tax and a sales tax that is over 8% in most places.

And yet...we are still several billion in the hole.

Somebody has to pay for all those government employees. Those 100k+ pay cheques don't take care of themselves!

There shouldn't be property taxes period. You should be able to live on your property without income, as long as you're able to sustain yourself, and not have to worry about losing it. As it is now, if you don't pay your property taxes, you're deemed a criminal, and thrown off your property. In most places, being homeless is a criminal offense also!? The system's broken.

Your state is the beneficiary of welfare from the federal government. For every dollar Kentuckians pay in federal taxes, the federal government spends $1.45 in Kentucky. Sweet deal! For every dollar New Yorkers pay in federal taxes, the federal government spends $.79 in New York. It's even worse for me in New Jersey - the government only spends $.55 in NJ for every dollar it receives from us.

If it weren't for welfare recipients like you, the OP's taxes would be lower.

OUCH .... that's gotta hurt. I'm paying around 1.75%, and it can be painfull ... that's over 3% .... Are you sure there isn't like, a homeowner exemption or something? Maybe that tax rate applies to second homes, or rental properties?

Is property taxes really that high? I thought they were a yearly one time thing.

Interesting...I feel the opposite...we should have property tax...I don't think we should have income tax.

$500/month on a $175k house doesn't sound right... thats $6000 a year, which is more than a house that i'm looking at for $450k, which is $5500 a year. if it's true, NYS is really f'ed up

I 100% agree with you. our founding fathers would bitch slap our government for all the fucking taxes we have to pay. You and I dont own the land we "buy" the government does. our rent goes to them via property tax they are just our landlord.
