You have CAT5e cable; do you need CAT5e RJ45 ends to "keep the bandwith?"

Damn. Just when I think I'm finally smart on something. 😱

Cat5 is rated at 100MHz, Cat5e is rated at 350MHz. That I know.

I noticed that a bag of CAT5 RJ45 ends is $12, while the same bag of CAT5e ends is $40.

This is for a HOME network. Do I really need the "proper ends" or can I make do with the Cat5 ends?

not like it needs it but here's a bump cuz i'd like to see the answe to this question...

good luck,

Yes. Absolutely.

The entire system takes on the certification level of the lowest rated component.

And, if possible, the connectors should be from the same manufacturer of the cabling. The concept there is that the manufacturer can use one component to offset a weakness in another component (to produce the desired flat response).

Anixter's Technical Library will have some additional information.

Assuming you're only trying to run a 100Mbps Fast Ethernet network, you don't need to pay attention to it. If you're trying to use it at the upper limits of the 300 meter length, then you might want to pay the extra.

Incidentally, where are you buying connectors that they're charging 40 bucks? Even a bag of 100 shouldn't cost that much no matter what category it's for.

Opps stay tune we are posting at the same second, I wrote it before I saw your link.

I have the felling that MichaelD is probably referring to Keystone jacks. $40 for 12 is expensive but not uncommon.

Nope. I know the diff b/t the two...not much more than that though. 😉 My link above shows it.

Those are shielded connectors, that's the reason for the huge price jump (12 bucks for 100 to 40 bucks for 50). You should have no reason to be getting those. I'd say get the Cat6 connectors if you want to ensure high speed support, though they are still 4 times the price of the Cat5 connectors (but the Cat5e shielded are 7 times the price)

Oh...OK. 🙂 Thanks. On a side note, I am surprised at the cost of the keystones, though! :Q Wiring the house ain't gonna be cheap at all. 😱 Worth every cent, though. 🙂

I spent hours upon hours looking for a place that sold cheap(er) keystones. Finally, i bought them at home depot, i got 10 for $27, which i believe is just about the price everywhere else, i cant believe how much the little things cost!

That info helps me out, actually. I'll just get them at HD then. Thanks! 🙂

I redid an small office one time with everything being bought from Home Depot (keystones, CAT5e, tools, everything). Cheaper than any other place I could find at the time.
