I think you could build a pretty nice dual opteron workstation for $5K. Certainly you could build a completely tricked out one for well under $10K.

Now, if you're buying from an OEM who doubles or triples the price on anything designed for 'workstation' use...

yea thats true i priced one on Monarch and it was like 9000,

depending on what you wanted in it you coudl do it for 5K, if you didnt include displays in your cost,

I guess I would probably get something rediculous from VoodooPC if it were to be some monster desktop.
They have truley custom cases that arent plastic for their highest end systems, but at that pricerange its mainly going to be stuff like asking them to gold plate the whole case or something.
Solid state HDs, 30" lcds, liquid cooling, whatever...

Don't forget the display(s)! 🙂

holy moly

im lookin at that and it says you onlu need 1 DVI or 1 Analog out from your vid card to run that

now that just does not sound right to me. max output from DVI is 1920x1200 now haveing a 10x wall running 1920x1200 is a uber waste, CRT out can puts 2048x1536 but that is still a waste on a wall like that

they say they will run QXGA 3840 x 2400. now you needa Dual Link DVI capable card for that, and that happens to be what the IBM T221 runs at
they muct be altering the signal after it leaves the comp, but IDK how that would be doing that without making it look bad

Why would you buy a cray? You couldn't run anything besides a Ph.D. experiment, maybe map some weather, or fold a protein or two.

Yea that sounds like a great use of $50K, why didn't anyone else think of that?!?

What are you gonna do with yours? Play games? Wow, I already have a computer that can do that.
