Post everything here. I'm not planning on BUYING one. I'm just showing some guy that Alienware doesn't make the "best" pcs in the universe.

Don't care if its dual cpus and dual video cards. Just post the best you can get for that amount. Including Monitor, Case, etc.

Please include every part including motherboard, cpu, case, video cards, ram, hard drives, etc.

About 20 x 15k rpm cheatah scsi drives w/ a scsi connector with additional buffer
4x 2.6 ghz opterons
4 Gigs of ram
a 10 Gig powered ram drive to put the operating system on

With the remaining money I would find a way to somehow build a dedicated graphics computer with a athlon fx-55 and 4 Gigs ram... this would replace the video card in the system, and I'm sure with the 10-20k left over I could get someone to design it for me.

Edit: the motherboard would be a tyan NF4, the case would be just whatever server case I could find, probably a lianli, and the monitor would be either the apple 30" or the IBM one with like 3000x2300 resolution.

I would buy a nice car. Then I would put together an FX-55 system with dual 6800 ultras in SLI and a bunch of cheetah scis drives and a few gigs of powered ram like above.

What the F. $50K is obscene. At least make it "He picks the L33t Alienware system of his choice, we equal it with a custom-build for 1/3 the price."

And for $50K, I'm going to say the ECU, with attached Lotus Elise. :p

You must have meant $5k... but if you meant it. I'd take the first $45k and move to New Hampshire with the Free State Project and put a large down on some property. Then I'd have Monarch build me a custom job with the remainder.

what about going to virginia tech route, linking a bunch of apple xserve g5s in a cluster? i really dont know any of the technical details, but its the 3rd fastest supercomputer in the world. of course, it cost a couple million dollars and had a lot more than just a few in it.

I amnot saying alienware makes the best PC's, maybe they do, maybe they don't.

But first think of the term PC, personal computer. How many people do you know will spend 50K on a personal computer. Almost none, except for the insanely rich, and even then how many of these rich guys really care if they have a computer that fast. I mean obviously alienware doesn't make the faster computers in the world, but they do make some of the speediest PC's.

Why would you buy a cray? You couldn't run anything besides a Ph.D. experiment, maybe map some weather, or fold a protein or two.

Yea that sounds like a great use of $50K, why didn't anyone else think of that?!?

i'd buy a pimped out conversion van with the fold out bed in the back, and then install an alienware super pc in where the captains chairs would be. then i'd live in it. down by the river.

Ok HEHEHEHEH.

I would build the following

2 AMD Opteron 250s
The best opteron board
8 Gigs of Ram
4 400GB harddrives all in raid 0
Get an ATI Radeon X850XT PE
800Watt PSU
Probably get a Thermaltake Xaser V case
and i would get 3 prometia mach 2 coolers, one for each cpu(and run em at 3ghz each), and one for the vpu.

Lets see alienware make ANYTHING even 1/5 the speed of this baby ;)

thats about what I woudl do except id go with 8 gigs of ram, save about 2200$ there, id use a Lain li PC2000B case and id go with either 4x IBM T221's or 4x Planar WS231's cost less then then 1/2 of what thoes apples cost

also the Nvidia Quadro FX 4000 does dual, Dual link DVI and its considerbly cheaper then the 3D labs card
