You have $400 to spend....

You have $400 to spend.

I want something faster than my current laptop:
A Presario 2100
AMD mobile 2400xp 512 megs ram(ddr) - radeon IGP 320 shared ram graphics card
30 gig HD

Can it be done?

Already have a cdrw/dvdrom drive/floppy,monitor so no need to include those things.

Thanks folks!

Faster, yes, but, IMO, $400 isn't going to stretch far enough to make that difference all tht noticeable.

Edit: I am obviously wrong. Disreguard what I said, and have a look at sneakystuff's post below mine.

Used ATI Radeon 9500 Pro - 80$
Used AMD 64 2800+ -120$
Used Chaintech VNF NF3-250 -70$
Used Mushkin 512MB PC3200 -70$
Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu -31$
Some Cheap 80GB HD - $35

$409 w/o Mouse-Keyboard..

Question though: Would 2100ddr ram work on that set up SneakyStuff? Looks like I already have a case here for it, so can knock that off as well.

ANTEC Solution Series Beige Mini Tower Case with 300W Power Supply, Model "SLK1600" -RETAIL
$48.50

Kingston ValueRAM Dual Kits 184 Pin 512MB(256MBx2) DDR PC-3200
$86.24

Chaintech nforce2 - 47.00

AMD Sempron 2400+ 1.667GHz, Socket A Processor - Retail
$60.00

Total (Before tax): $ 237

That leaves the hard disk, mouse, speakers and keyboard 80 bucks for it. 10 for the speakers, 10 for the mouse and KB from the office max or staples and 60 bucks for a Western Digital 80 GB for 50$. Totals to about 310. Buy used 9600 for $90 and you got yourself a nice rig.

Good luck with the build. Hope this helps.

CD.

//edit// didnt see that you already had the monitor.

You can get Corsair/Mushkin 512 PC3200 sticks for $70 which is cheaper than the Kingston though and didn't he mention he already HAD a case?

Plus, why get Sempron when you can get an Athlon XP 2500+ M for the SAME Price and BETTER performance? Or just get an A64 build. I edited mine. 😛

other than playing some intense games, i don't see the reason behind getting a desktop- that laptop is speedy enough for a lot of stuff.

but if you have $400 to blow, i'd probably buy some other stuff (maybe a flat panel...)

for 10 dollars more you get Corsair value RAM, comes with warranty, trusted brand name, and it is coming from a good source, via newegg instead of outpost

edit: also look at used video cards, you can probably pick up a 9600xt for the same price or cheaper in the fs/t forum here...

As mentioned by otheres, spend the extra money on name brand memory.

No one should recommend the Chaintech board AT ALL ANYMORE. The Epox solution beats it out in price, performance, features and overclockability.

It's a good board, but the one I ordered from Newegg had bad Vcore fluctuations. They might have fixed it with a new board revision, but FYI it's a well documented problem with those boards.

Hmm...I dunno, never heard of that. Never had any issues with the couple I've used. If it was documented, perhaps it has been fixed. The chaintech has issues as well, I'm sure.
