I agree. A new hybrid would definitely make the most sense, economically at least

I spend about $500 fixing up my current car and put the rest in the bank to help me pay for rent and bills, and pretty soon, student loans

I'd probably get several vehicles if someone gave me the 20k and told me I had to spend it...

Probably: a few nice (used) snowmobiles for the family,
A couple of nice (used) 4-wheelers

I'd keep the car I have.

2003-2007 Honda Accord or 2007 Mazda 3 or 2007 Honda Fit

I am really liking the Fit due to the great price, great gas mileage, great fun factor and the great utility. I think I would get that since its a lot cheaper than either the Accord or the Mazda 3.

But then again, there is also the 2007 Civic Hybrid for great gas mileage ...

LOL it really is tough deciding on a car

Good luck, however.

Used Audi Allroad 2.7T w/6-spd manual tranny. If you can only have one vehicle, this does it all. Perfect for anyone with an active lifestyle.

If you're going used Maximas, it's hard to go wrong with the '01 20th Anniversary Edition, and you can pocket the rest...though I'll admit, I also like the look of the newer generation more.

only the 2003 (or the 1st half of 2004 i think) has the 3.5L VQ that's currently in almost all of the nissan lineup. 255bhp >>> 222bhp. honestly i really think the new altima looks a lot better than the gen4 maxima, but i think the maxima has better interior than the altima 3.5SE.
For 2004 the Maxima went up to 265 HP. An ex of mine had an 01 AE. I liked it. I went be doing 90+ on the interstate and not realize it.
It went though a couple converters and O2 sensors though. Premium gas too.

The RX-7 tended to be a bit problematic. They flood easily. And smoke. Never saw one with many miles. Turbo problems too. Fun as heck to drive through corners though. I got to drive them around a lot. I worked at Mazda in '95. FYI they were only available w/ turbos.

Yeah, I had an '01 AE a couple years ago. I loved that car, but it wasn't very practical for mountains in the winter + skiing, so I traded it in. I just figured that for the price they would run today, the interiors, performance and look would be a pretty decent deal, and leave a good amount left over to invest or spend on something else. Premium gas does suck, but atleast they get decent mileage on it. I could fenagle 28-30 highway, so long as I wasn't a lead foot. But as you say, it's too easy to be going 90-100mph and not even know it in those cars.

Maybe I'll look into a used Maxima or Altima if I move back to Florida. It'd be nice to have a fun car again (as opposed to my CRV, which is in the shop right now anyway.....bastard guy that rear-ended it * /me shakes fist at sky*).

I think trying to tackle those problems by myself would be half the fun. :D
