I've narrowed my choice of 19" black monitors down to 2! It comes down to the IBM P96 and NEC FE950+. I'll give you some specs on both as well as links to the monitors.

IBM P96

Tube Type: FD Trinitron (by Sony)
Viewable Image size: 17.9 inches
Dot Pitch: 0.24mm
Max Resolution: 1600x1200 85Hz
Approx. Price: $580
IBM Black Monitor

NEC FE950+

Tube Type: standard tube type
Viewable Image size: 18.0 inches
Dot Pitch: 0.25mm
Max Resolution: 1792 X 1344 68Hz
Approx. Price: $380
NEC Black Monitor

Now, i am leaning towards the NEC just because of the price. In your experiences, is NEC a good monitor dealer or bad one? How is there tech support and warranty service? is it 24hrs with an 800 number?

hello people!!, he said BLACK!!!

The IBM is a better monitor, but I'd never pay 200$ extra for it. You're not gonna use 1600x1200 on your desktop anyways, unless you want to go blind very soon. (the Nec can still do that res, but at 75Hz, which is enough for games)

The samsung may be great, but unfortunately it only comes in white! A white monitor with a black system doesn't go!

Frankly, i don't understand why all computer products are white! Tv's are black, vcr's are black, speakers are black, dvd players are black etc. So why are computer products mainly white?

Anyways, more input on NEC's service would be appreciated.

I dunno about the IBM but the NEC 950 sux in my humble opinion. I have the FE700+ and while the 17 inch is very good, I can't say the same thing about the 19 inch. We use the 950 at work and it's worse than the 17inch.

The NEC has a NF tube(mitsubishi) I believe.....so I'd take the NEC....simply because the difference between the two, if any at all, isn't enough to justify the price difference.

Are you talking about the NEC 950+ or the NEC 950? PC World gave it a pretty good rating (950+) so it can't be that bad. If you could clarify which model that would be appreciated, thanks.

jagr10: I believe it's the 950+. (we got both the black and white one). Colors are very good but text is really bad.

I have 3 NEC 1250's sitting on my desk that I use. They are the best monitors I have ever used. Sharp text (even in the corners) and bright, vivid colours.

You just have to fiddle with all of the preferences (and there are a lot of them) to customize the picture to your taste.

How bad is the text? Is it eyestraining? Is it blurry? I started another thread and most people are saying get the NEC and not the IBM. In this one people are saying get the NEC because of price and not the IBM. You're saying the text is really bad. Now i'm confused. I need a black monitor that's 19" or a 21" monitor that's cheap and black (which isn't possible). Hitachi's CM772B monitor got a horrible review saying the graphics were just plain bad. I don't think there are any black monitor's left.

Jagr: Dude I am gonna be honest with you...we got a 950+ recently for one of our clients and as soon as we got out of the box to test it. Everybody at the office was making remarks on how bad the text looks. The colors are really vibrant and warm. I have the 17 inch FE700+ and it's better than the 950+. But if you can live with that (to tell you the truth I don't care much about the text), get it cos it's a real cool monitor.

Dark, thanks for the honesty. PCworld did a review on the 950+ and they mentioned the text wasn't as clear as other models.

Is there a way to fix it? I think i better see this in person to see how bad the text is. Maybe i should go check out the IBM too to see how bad the corners are. Too bad i can't check out a dell monitor in person. Or is there a way?
