;)

I mean really... I had so much to rant about today, I don't even know where to start. :p

As I review my personal log of tech calls I received, I feel the need to show you how silly things can get... especially on a busy Monday:

People that didn't use stand offs: 3
People that started up PC without fan: 2
People that didn't use fan you supplied but used one their "tech buddy" recommended and managed to smash the die with: 2
People that ordered RIMMs when they needed DDR: 1
People that ordered DIMMs when they needed DDR: 2
People that bought a Socket 370 or Socket A CPU for a Socket 7 motherboard: 3
People that didn't know you had to set the bus speed for the CPU: 9 (this one is killing me, folks)
People that thought the ATX power supply was dead because it did nothing when they threw the switch: 4
People that bought AGP video cards when they don't have an AGP slot: 3

.....sigh....... It does go on..... :D

at least those are real problems. i hate it when ive had to talk to people because they couldn't figure out where their task bar went. it's because they turned the vertical adjustment knob. ug.

<< If you are so educated, why are you doing tech support? >>

Because it pays well. It's like a garbage man job. Who else can or will do it?

I'll give you some background:

I used to sell computers: All you learn is about compatability issues. What works with what. Nothing more. Most computer sales people are numbskulls (most, not all.)

I used to build computers: All you do is build the same stuff over and over. No troubleshooting skill involved. If a part doesn't work, you replace it in the skillful way of a typical "parts jockey". About as much skill as a tire man at Sears Auto Center.

I used to repair computers: This was a challenging job. Troubleshooting skills are necessary, but it still doesn't pay as well. Work like crazy and barely make ends meet.

Now I do RMA troubleshooting and phone tech support. This requires the same skills as troubleshooting a computer as I did when I used to repair computers, but requires even greater skill because now it has to be done BLIND!!! This is why the job pays so well.

Take a cocky kid that thinks they're God's gift to computers and put him on a phone for 8 hours straight trying to troubleshoot PCs blind, and chances are he'll go running back to 7-11 for that night shift cashier job the next day! ;)

I think the only "step up" is to actually run your own gig, but this only offers the satisfaction of being your own boss, but in this industry certainly can not guarantee financial security. I've got a mortgage to pay. ;) I'll stick with this for a while, thanks. :D

I'm sure allot of people here are in the position I'm in- Unofficial tech support. Everybody at work comes to me to have me solve their problems. Sometimes all I can get out of them is it doesn't work. I've taken to telling everybody "Why don't you buy a Dell"
