this is the first time in a while, something in the news has really got my attention...

it's actually kind of the lack of news that's scaring me...

the big picture.. Russia's not gonna stop you guys.. i'm afraid they're gonna take all of Ukraine in the next couple of weeks, and i'm afraid, we might retalliate.. that's what i'm really afraid of. if we retalliate, directly, or by proxy (maybe finland, or another baltic state) i'm afraid there could be a domino effect and before we know it shit could actually get quite serious..

i hate be a doom porner.. but this time, man read between the lines here, it's critical. and i dont know how quickly it could escalate to some kind of crazy ass america war time scenario like we havent seen since desert storm or worse.

i've also noted an INSANE amount of internet censorship over this entire fiasco as well, reddit, twitter, even google, it seems are all being censored actively right now.. the propoganda is completely out of control.

There really isn't much we can do, unless you are willing to put your life on the line and go to war.

meh. we are all so interdependant on each other, the only way countries can survive AND fight is by making small satellite regions unstable.
actual war with a modern industrial nation would take an extreme action of crazy magnitude.

Society today is so ignorant of just how fast things can get out of control, and exactly what would happen during a full nuclear exchange, that few people share your worry.

Xbox is too important.

I believe there was a book written about this. It covers the police state and endless war.

As long as there are human beings on this planet there will always be war. I think we are going to eventually go head to head with Russia, and I also think the Chinese will get involved. It is just a matter of time really...and yes it scares me too.

Eventually somebody will be nutty enough to engage in full on war between advanced industrialized nations. It will probably destroy the world as we know it. Maybe not literally in the physical sense, but just our way of life, standard of living, etc.

Hopefully I'm 6ft deep when that day comes around.. But given some of the wacks in power, it might happen in my lifetime..

Sad world. Too bad we can't have the ideal Star Trek society yet, the world would be much better off.

I'd jump in if there was a voluntary join with lower medical requirements or a draft with lower medical requirements. I might not be able to pass basic off the bat, but I can pull a trigger if they start drafting people then just start shipping them out after showing them how to fire and reload.

China is not as scary for one reason: India.

In rebuttal, obama is a talker rather than a doer.

He has shown a blatant disrespect for our laws. So what makes you think he is going to care about a treaty?

Obama has no foreign policy except to lower trade sanctions on iran.

Honestly, you have nothing to worry.

I know, you are afraid of Syria and Turkey and Israel and now Russia. Take all this stuff with the grain of salt it barely deserves. Russia could take all of Ukraine and it won't change your life in the slightest. We could retaliate and again, it won't change your life in the slightest. Not like you're gonna get drafted.

We could retaliate and again, it won't change your life in the slightest.

For the vast majority of human history that has been true. It is not like Germany could bomb the USA.

But times change.

The world has intertwined trade treaties, our factories have been dismantled and moved to China, ICBMs and nuclear subs, radical islam moving into London and other parts of Europe.

The time of sending our youth to foreign nations to die by the hundreds of thousands has passed.

During the Battle of Antietam 22,717 (so much for white male privilege) died on a single day. Americans can no longer stomach those kinds of numbers.

Victory has defeated us. We have grown weak in our complacency that nobody stand up to the United States. Americans no longer understand the concept of "sacrifice." The days of Titanic and Vietnam and certain social classes being worth more than others are gone. There are no longer any groups that are respected to go and die while the rest of us live in peace.

We can no longer point our finger at the poor and the blacks and say you there, you are expected to go and die for your nation while the middle class and the rich live in luxury. Part of the civil rights movement is we no longer have a class that can be sacrificed, which is a good thing.

Nobody wants to go to war with a first world nation. Military might has gotten to a point where sending kids off to war and the rest of the population remaining unaffected is no longer an option. With advances in technology the war will be brought to us.

We can not invade Russia nor can we invade China. With nuclear weapons, cruise missiles, subs that can stay submerged for months,,, widespread conventional warfare is not an option.

Nope.

Let them fall, get crushed, etc. I don't care.

We don't need/want another Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq, etc. etc.

That mindset is part of the problem.

Going to war with Russia will not be like "Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq, etc. etc"

The United States has not fought a real enemy since WW II. Even then it is not like Japan or Germany could engage in widespread bombing campaigns.

Have to agree with Texashiker here.

Obama has no balls.

Whereas other countries are so afraid of Vladimir Putin that they name mountains after him:

Still nope.

Just because you want to get your rocks off on us being a super power again, doesn't mean we should send over hundreds of thousands to die, so you can feel proud to be an American.

It's a different world. Much smaller and much more prone to political tactics and surgical strikes.

Wow how easily people forget. We went through an entire Cold War of the Russians invading their neighbors and managed not to get into a shooting war. Imagine if we had the likes of Sarah Palin, John McCain and Fox News busting JFK's balls during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The bottom line is that going to war over everything is a really shitty foreign policy. And we WON the Cold War without going to actual war. We did it economically. This incident is no different. The reason the Ukrainians revolted in Kiev this winter was over the economy. Thanks to Russia's foray into Crimea, the Russian economy is taking it on the chin. The Moscow stock exchange is already off by 15% since the invasion and foreign capital is fleeing Russia because investors expect sanctions to continue to expand. Russia's economic growth is expected to be 0-1% this year because of the invasion.

Russia is still a poor country. And every year they remain poor, they fall further behind the West in all the standards that matter to the Russian people. They're ignoring this presently because of Nationalism, but that hardly ever lasts. We will not go into a shooting war with Russia because we can achieve all the goals we want by bankrupting the country from the outside.

Just like we did in the Cold War. . .

The 1960's called. They want you!

American media is censored and full of propaganda on a regular basis. I haven't seen anything to indicate this is any different.

With that said I am concerned. Not just because of what Russia is doing but what all the world powers are doing. Nobody seems to give a shit about anyone else. Everyone just does what they feel is in the best interests of their country but all too often at the expense of millions of people.

How do you call fighting village dwellers of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan a real war? Fighting people who are still living in the iron age, maybe even stone age, is somehow respectable?

The United States is good at picking on small nations, and has been since the 1960s. Lets see obama pick on Putin.

Yeah, again, you want this to happen, for the sake of saying it was a war.

You have no backing for this, other than; let's fight a war.

I find it interesting that you would even mention Vietnam. We lost that war.
