Lost a good friend from high school, killed in an auto accident in his sophomore year in college. But you know what? I haven't seen more than two or three people from high school since graduating more than 30 years ago and doubt that I would have ever seen him again if he had lived. This kid was brilliant and had a huge interest in history and world affairs ... I'm guessing he would likely have been a very good attorney, perhaps a congressman or senator.
Another friend that I'd known since first grade blew his head off with a shotgun. Also hadn't seen him in more than 30 years. He had a weird, promising, disappointing life after high school. He graduated from medical school but never went into medicine. Then he was a rental property owner and landlord back in the home town with a dozen or more properties, but went broke from real estate speculations in the housing crash. Then he was a bar owner, and went broke again. Then he was involved in some weird scam that made national news, and ultimately killed himself.
